Invent a New Word by Lincøln
May 27th, 2007 12:29 PMSo I invented the word Snarfle - (snär-fuh l) Function: adjective
adj: To publicly acknowledge and express that someone has sneezed.
I began using it a few months ago consistently to anyone who has sneezed. And since then a handful of my friends now use it exclusively to mark the passage of a sneeze. My niece now uses the term as well. But most importantly I sometimes work with Mexicans who don't speak English and are always asking me how to say things in English, for example they might say "¿Como se dice arbol?" And I would reply "Tree". Well one day I was asked how to say salud in English and I told them it was snarfle. So now there are three Mexicans who believe the actual English word is snarfle. And they will go forth and propagate this new word.
(I have also implanted the new word "rocktastic" into common vernacular, but I'm not sure if I invented it, or rather, I'm not sure that I'm the first to invent that word, so I leave that one off)
Feel free to use "snarfle" to acknowledge when somebody sneezes henceforth.

Good thinking! It's about time we put into use a non-religious word to commemorate the event of sneezing.
Also, the mexican part really made me chuckle. Sneaky. :D
You know, I don't think gesundheit is explicitly religious.
Edit: But well done anyways!
"salud". Both "salud" and "gesundheit" mean "health", I believe. However, I don't think Lincoln was saying that the these variations had religious connotations only that he didn't like them for some reason or another and wanted an English version non religious term.
Cyber Kitty is correct. Although gesundheit and salud are non-denominational, they are not English words. Snarfle is an English word. Go forth and propagate it.
your language-invasion should be recorded with people like mantooth.... i envision massive disruption en la cocina!
also, escribimos árbol.
