INSTRUCTIONS: Obsessively collect something for no less than one month.

Document your collection and its growth.

So as you all know by now. I am a comic book geek and have been collecting comic books for a very long time. And since quitting cold turkey thanks to this damned game, I haven't been to my comic book shop for a very long time. What I usually do is save all of my one dollar bills for comics, because I like my comic dealer and knowing that it's a small business, I understand that one dollar bills are valuable especially when most people pay in twenties. And especially on Wednesdays. Since quitting collecting comics, I haven't changed my habit of collecting all of my ones, but I haven't spent any. So my collection of one dollar bills is incredible. And since I realized how big my collection has gotten, I have been obsessively hoarding them to increase the size of the collection. I bought a burrito that cost three bucks once and paid with a twenty, and the lady behind the counter was taking awhile, and then after rummaging through the drawer for some time, she looked up at me sheepishly and said "I'm sorry, we seem to be out of large bills, would you mind if I gave you your change all in ones?" I think the way my face lit up with ecstasy was a good indication that that was going to be just fine.

And I have been putting all of my ones in this giant plastic tub for a long time.

And coincidentally, I was just talking to Lank a couple days ago about open ended tasks and I never know when to submit them. Because this collection could have gone on pretty much forever. But yesterday something happened to make me submit this today. See, yesterday as I was driving home from the theater I realized I was running on empty so I pull into a gas station ($3.49, can you believe this shit?!), I bought fifteen dollars worth of gas paid for with three crumpled up fives fished out from the lowest depths of my pocket (along with some old receipts that are so faded I can't tell what they were from and some lint), which also represented the last of my money (until I get my next check). So in the interest of eating today, I decided to post this so that I can go out and start spending those ones.
First person that's not CM to road trip to L.A. gets to come with me to a strip club.
When I counted it all up to see how much I'd actually collected, it turned out to be exactly $400. Not $401, not $399, but $400 exactly. I was impressed and that kind of serendipity made me think this was a good place to end the task no matter what those nagging voices in the back of my head were saying about keeping the task going.

But first I documented my collection. And had a bit of fun with it.

I know it's me in the video, and it's lame, but every time I watch it I just get giddy.

SO for hypotheticall purposes...
if those 400 $1 bills had all been hundred dollar bills...
you would need 2,500 stacks of those to make $1,000,000.
Even to make $100,000 you would need 250 stacks...
which means those briefcases full of large sums of money
in movies are bullshit and really you would
probably need a gym bag.

Vote for cheap gas. It's $3.49 here.

Crap. That's what I meant. It's 3.49. Stupid slippy sloppy fingers. You can take you vote back if you like.

***I've edited it in the task.***

I recon it would be more shiny and painful with £1 coins but still fun to a degree though. Or maybe 1ps would be better...

Its kinda sad that gas money had to be what stopped it. The trouble with L.A: It keeps you in your car...

Loved the stapled bill.

I could be using my bike, since I'm not hauling my tools around with me lately, but there's another open ended task I'm doing that makes it handy to have my car with me. So I keep driving.

You picked a good time to wrap up the task---I think the universe was telling you something.
That stapled one is definitely special.
Have you seen those websites where you can enter in the serial numbers on one dollar bills, and watch them move around?

$3.49 was on the low end. It runs as high as $4.00 round these parts nowadays.

Youve struck on something here.

http://sf0.org/completedTasks/?t=month&order=votes

^^ all of the top-voted tasks this month have 5 flags.

posted by Adam on March 27th, 2008 4:12 PM

Although our Make It Work podcast task now has 6 flags. Yet no red X

"15 + 180 points :: 138 comments :: 36 votes :: 6 flags :: 5 collaborators"

(no subject)
posted by Flea on March 27th, 2008 4:31 PM

25Zero's A Clue has 8 Flags, and just 24 votes, so it doesn't fit this "inadvertent auto-flag" pattern...
Which leads me to believe that public opinion is really divided...

That being said, flying money is always awesome! VOTES!

posted by Bryce on March 27th, 2008 4:33 PM

Why did it get flagged?

(no subject)
posted by Flea on March 27th, 2008 4:37 PM

Honestly have no idea. Like Make It Work mentioned above, there's no sign of a Red X, so I just assumed it was a glitch of some form...

Still weird though...

I mean, seriously, that is one of the least flagable tasks in the history of the site.

I suspect it has something to do with all of the new robot players 'spontaneously' showing up.

I think the plan is hit all the top completions with 5 flags and then fly in with the killer 6th flag in one fatal swoop.

(no subject)
posted by Adam on March 27th, 2008 5:18 PM

But Make It Work already has 6 flags. Apparently.

But I do believe the influx of robots is related.

Frankly, to whoever is orchestrating this mass X-ing: Whatever.

If you try to do anything needlessly destructive, it'll be reverted.

If you think you're doing something constructive, you're probably wrong.

The number of good sockpuppets I can count on one hand.

Of course, it could all be a glitch.

(no subject)
posted by Adam on March 27th, 2008 5:27 PM

Or it could be someone's cunning completion of a SNIDE task for which they will recieve votes later.

But chyeah.

I hope it is a big conspiracy, I love conspiracy, so much more exciting than glitch.

posted by Lincøln on March 27th, 2008 5:29 PM

Minch Niddle's Rephotography also has six flags, but by old Glasnost rules, it would have a red X by now. There must me some glitch or some new rule where n00bs flags don't count or something.

Sean?

Looks like it, there were two tasks flagged recently with the 6 flags rules

6 flags and a big red-x

posted by Kyle Westwood on March 27th, 2008 6:01 PM

Yeah I'm not sure whats goin on with that either cus our clues task has 8 flags but no X but lots of votes so I thought it could be the more votes you have the more flags are needed or when it goes past a certain number of votes the flags don't count anymore or something. I'm really not sure though.

Regarding Flagging
posted by Sean Mahan on March 28th, 2008 1:48 PM

Anonymity be damned, the flags have been from 1,2,3, 4, and 5. They were all created within about an hour of each other the other day, and all have other players' images as their player photo. Sam and I discussed the situation and decided to say, "Let's see how this plays out." That said, I'd hope any plan this is a part of has aspirations beyond doing silly stuff on the internet.

Since there've been flagging shenanigans before, the "Red X" trigger does, indeed, now take the number of votes into account. If that starts a sock puppet arms race, we'll start just requiring people send in a notarized photocopy of their passport before their account goes live.

Go base twelve! +1
posted by lefthandedsnail on July 9th, 2008 6:29 AM

Okay, I admit it, this one gets special, invisible, unusable bonus points from me for its support of Mom and Pop comic book stores. (side note: WAY overdue to hit up Earth 2. Running behind on Buffy Season 8 and Vagabond. So sad.)
However, half of those special, invisible, unusable bonus points are being revoked for deeming a concurrence of brokeness and base ten alignment serendipitous. Yes, the use of base ten over time in many places gives it a certain amount of significance, but really, are we going to allow our number system be dictated by our fingers forever?
Go base twelve!
