Important Business Lunch by Loki, Lank, Bex., SNORLAX

May 2nd, 2008 12:28 AM / Location: 37.794855,-122.3954

INSTRUCTIONS: Assemble a small group of players dressed in very silly outfits. Conduct yourselves in public as would a group of serious business professionals. Ride public transit, go to lunch, show up for a meeting at an existing corporate headquarters of your choosing, etc.

At 12:00pm on Thursday, April 17th, Lank, Lowteck, Loki and Bex met up in downtown San Francisco to talk business.

041720081552img49668.jpg

We converged at the intersection of Market and 8th Street, then proceeded underground to take the Muni system into the business district. Along the way we phoned colleagues and argued office politics.

041720081504img49619.jpg

We disembarked at the Montgomery station and returned to the surface, walking along Market Street toward the Embarcadero Center, our destination for lunch. The people of San Francisco proved a friendly, inquisitive bunch, if a tad obsessed with fashion. Several stopped us in the street to chat, but we explained that we were running late for an important business lunch and continued on our way.

We chose to eat at a fine Thai restaurant called Osha, which offers delicious food and friendly service in an upscale, professional atmosphere.

041720081516img49630.jpg

Whilst nestled in the heart of the restaurant, we ate well and talked up a storm. Here are some of the issues we discussed:

- graphs
- forced elf labor
- GPS implants in forced elf labor
- disciplinary issues for forced elf labor
- benefits of replacing elves with monkeys
- replacing forced elf labor with forced monkey labor
- re-branding elf slavery as "involuntary apprenticeship"
- how Janine in marketing is Such a Biatch

041720081532img49644.jpg

When our appetites and our business concerns were satisfied, we toasted on reaching an agreement, and the wait staff recorded the occasion for us.

041720081532img49647.jpg

We were preparing to leave when a man in a suit at a table next to ours asked why we were "all dolled up". We were a bit confused and simply explained that we were working. Hadn't he ever seen people have a Business Lunch? When we stood up, he must have seen our briefcases, because we overheard him say to his colleague, "Oh - they are working."

Then we headed back down Market Street and went back to our respective offices, secure in the knowledge that Important Things in the realm of Business had been accomplished.

And that Monkeys are cute.

I was thinking the pizza might order pizza, but I guess that's not really a serious business kind of lunch choice.

Loki = best costume ever.

I would like to know the story about how that pizza came into your possession.

Thanks; however, by any metric except awkwardness when traversing crowded restaurants, I'd argue that the costumes of Lank and Bex are both superior.

When Lank organized this, he was quite insistent that we strive for maximum silliness. He stressed it repeatedly, and used the Bigger Better or More Bizarre hot dog as an example.

After an embarrassing amount of consideration, I decided that the two most fundamentally silly costume categories were fluffy animals and food items. To make a recognizable fluffy animal requires real sewing skill and expensive materials, which left me with food. Among all the foods, pizza struck me as the easiest to assemble from sidewalk furniture and the cheapest possible bargain-bin fabric. (I seriously considered going banana, 'cause I love bananas, but wasn't sure my rudimentary upholstery skills were up to the task.)

Which reminds me, I've got a free pizza costume for anyone who wants it.

Most of it started out as garbage, but now it's value-added garbage and I feel bad about throwing it out. None the less, fifteen cubic feet of foam pizza isn't something my apartment needs.
