Tasks / Cassandra

Correctly prophesy a future event or trend. The trend or event must be considered highly unlikely, or not considered at all, by the general populace. This task is not complete until your prophecy has come true.

Can. Do.
I make prophecies all the time, and they are usually craaazy. So the question is, can I use any of the unlikely prophecies I've made in the last few years upon them coming true? Or would that be treated as retroactive (pretroactive!) and thus do I have to come up with a new one now that the task has been introduced?
The problem I've had while kicking this idea around in my head is how do we make the proclamation of our prophesy public? Do we do it here in the comments? And then when it comes true later, we can submit our praxis? Because having a date on the initial prophesy seems like the key to this task.
That's a good question, and one that's relevant to probably more than just this task. I think 'lawl i totally called teh fact taht (sports team) wud win (sports championship)' is certainly not enough.
The nice thing is, considering this is a 250-point task, I don't think there are many players at that level who would go to great lengths to lie about a task completion. So I would say, something with a datestamp on it, or other dated proof would be sufficient to me, though I don't know about sf0 at large.
Burn Unit: Do you consider the task to be making the prophecy? If you do, then that would be a retroactive completion. I guess it's a matter of opinion. I'd say only prophecies made from this point forward count.
So, are you allowed to actively make it come true?
I think it depends on the context of the prediction. So if you're predicting that Mike Gravel will be the Democratic nominee in 2008, you're allowed to vote for him... but if your prophecy is "I predict a horde of zombies will tear through downtown San Francisco [not a good prophecy, actually, too likely]" you're not allowed to go and organize a zombie flash-mob. In short, probably not.
I once predicted my sister would drop her spoon at the zoo, and I gave her a second spoon just in case.
Sure enough, she dropped her spoon.
I already know a bunch of upcoming trends.
But are they highly unlikely?
Hmmm.
I am tempted to make predictions about my workplace, but any outcome seems equally unlikely.
Um, I make my living as a fortune teller if anyone wants a reading to help along with this one...
Lincoln:
Well, if you were making a serious prediction, there's always Long Bets.
But for this task, I think post it in the comments.
In the comments sounds good; I'll do that. I'm also going with having another SF0 player be the person who verifies whether my predictions come true, knowing about them in advance. I have just predicted that Quincy Potts will get a phone call from his girlfriend during his D&D game tonight, and the results of that should be pretty awesome.
We shall see.
I think people should publically make their proclamations in whatever form they deem to be sufficiently awesome.
I like that the title references one of my favorite stories.
Indeed. There's no reason to restrict ourselves to these comments - but these comments are an acceptable means. (I'm hoping to have the awesome be the source, not the announcement, of my prediction... also if it works, the success of something that specific and not based on anything non-bullshit would be pretty impressive. Though perhaps not worth 250 on its own.)
Obama is going to be shot (feel free to quote me)
I must complete this task. it is my namesake.
Let me consult my 'crystal ball' aka my brain.
Civil war in Taiwan. You heard it here first.
For the record, I do not mean war between Taiwan and Mainland China.
Prediction: on September 23, 2008, an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or greater will occur in the San Francisco Bay Area.
... an earthquake caused by CGØ's epic tasking.
One approach to this is to phrase what you consider a likely prediction in a way that makes it seem highly unlikely.
Vena Nightmare is the guardian of such a prediction that I have made.
Cookie wants to do this task. He has a cunning plan, but it would involve some collaboration.
Wow, the patience needed would be huge.
