The Second Situation by teucer, Spidere, mock piratey turtle, Lincøln, Haiku, Ben Yamiin, JJason Recognition, Dax Tran-Caffee

INSTRUCTIONS: Form a vast and far reaching conspiracy to complete a complex or extraordinary goal.

The conspirators didn't know what they were getting into. Not at first, anyway. It was too dangerous. The more people who knew, the more potential there was for the information to leak.

piratey monkey was returning.

The pitch:
You are cordially invited to join a conspiracy.

If you are interested, please identify a task which you would like to plan and perform with 1-5 assisting co-conspirators (who will be assigned to you, though you may make requests of people to invite; at least one will be assigned without your advance knowledge) sometime between 1 pm on Saturday, August 16th and 8pm on Sunday, August 17th. The bigger, the better. If you are interested in assisting other conspirators in their tasks, please let me know this as well.

I will try to arrange specifics by next Wednesday, August 13th, so please let me know what and when you might be interested in planning--some plans may have to be moved or reconfigured, so if you have time to propose multiple possible plans, that would certainly be appreciated.

I recognize that I have given you very few details as to the nature of the conspiracy. As a cell agent in the conspiracy, I cannot tell you too much, for fear or revealing the nature of our plan. Please do not conspire to uncover the nature of the conspiracy in advance; all will be revealed by the time of your task. However, I say to you now that this will be a Big Story of this era, and that you will be glad to have been a part of it.

Conspiratorially,
Spidere

Many players rose to the challenge, and arranging them was no mean feat. It is fortunate that Spidere is a man of many plans, but this...this was a scale larger than anything he had attempted before.

30 players were contacted
18 took part in some way (plus piratey and Spidere)
20 tasks were completed (with 5 more attempted, and a total of 48 considered and partially planned)

That might not sound like a lot. And in some respects, it was not. To do this over the course of a week, with a few months of planning, would be quite feasible. To do it in 48 hours, with a month of planning, feasible. To do it in 24 hours, with just a couple of weeks of planning? Insane. Impossible. And yet...

Schedules, summary charts and graphs (a graph linking conspirators via tasks is in progress), and one really big spreadsheet.

Most players didn't know what was going on, but some came very close. JBryce figured out that Spidere was not alone in this conspiracy, and that he was front man for another. Doktor Harmon was sure that something was going to happen at Prom.

In fact, the conspirators weren't even told, until later, of the larger plan which they were a part of. Even once piratey's role was revealed, there was another layer. For this was not simply the return of piratey. Nor was it simply a manifold of tasking. There was a grand plan in place. The crazy plan.

The plan to Storm Isengard and bring piratey to the front page in one day.

With more time to plan, and less sleeping or having fun at Prom, i think we could have even brought her to level 8. It's entirely possible. But the Fiery Rain of Apocalyptic Trinkets from Heaven didn't come together (mostly because we decided not to get arrested and/or shot.. our idea was very good); our cathedral was gone when we came to look for the congregation; we ran out of time for the Pedestrian Permit Distribution; and the Royal Wedgie just never got enough awesome together to make it. And I have to say, it was a crazy time, and absolutely worth it.

So, that's it--that's the end. Our 24 hours of posting are up. piratey is back.

Conspiracy Map

There we go. Properly complex, but has some useful insight. In fact, this same method could be used for anyone's completed tasks, then perhaps visually ordered to show their most common collaborators and the links between them. Hmm...

Conspirator Social network

Pretty dull, actually--suffers from the same "what am I looking for" problem of many social network graphs.

No plan survives contact with the enemy

No plan survives contact with the enemy

Out of all the resources we needed to pull this off, the one in shortest supply was time.
