Ace In The Hole by Darkaardvark

INSTRUCTIONS: Create a deck of playing cards featuring real-world desires, actions, people, objects, feelings, laws, or anything else. Use the deck by playing appropriate cards in appropriate situations in your real life.

Major update: Expansion pack!

This task was some awesome fun from start to finish. Even if I did have to use scissors.

I decided to use the Magic card layout for my designs, though I didn't want to follow the conceit all the way through and actually make them playable cards . I just thought that Magic cards had a nice layout and some good editing tools that made the process easier.

Note the Sutro Tower logo. It looks like a cross at the image size I put up, but trust me, it looks better on the actual card. They look better in general, actually, than the designs.

The first step was the design of the cards. This took a lot longer than I expected- several weeks. It was pretty slow going. As I went, I added an image to go with the card (and a colored background to make them easier to pick out of a stack and to complement the picture). I did try to keep the cards from becoming overly angry/pessimistic, but apparently that's all I could come up with, because a fair amount of the cards are some variation of "shut up."

Next was printing, then cutting them out. That was a thankless task. Then I glued them to cards to make them sturdy and the fun began.

I pulled them out at various times throughout the days when I used them. Long arguments seemed to be the best openings for them. Reactions ranged from, "What the hell?" to "Hey, let me see the rest of those," to grabbing the card and chucking it across the room. None of the cards were destroyed, which made me happy.

And the obligatory SF0 plugging card... well, we'll see who shows up.

All in all, quite an enjoyable task!

I might post more later but the problem with snagging reaction shots is that my weirdness level goes from "I'm carrying around cards with pictures to support random points in the conversation" to "Now can I post pictures of u on teh interwebz?"

Update: 18 new cards, many based on sf0 tasks. Enjoy!

This is just so awesome. When I saw this challenge I didn't even read it because I never played a Magic: The Gathering type game ever before, and kinda never want to. So I barely even read the instructions. But you doing this, makes me want to make a set of cards now. Awesome.

I was looking to do this, but you did it with the same exact vision I had, regarding style and content and everything.

I don't think I could do this as well as you did, though. Excellent stuff..

I have a couple of suggestions:

This would be brilliant to use to complete the http://sf0.org/tasks/SFZero-Memorabilia/ task
I didn't see your name at the Journey event, http://sf0.org/events/?id=17
but that would be a perfect time to distribute packs of them. If you won't be there, I'd be happy to collaborate with you. ;)

Since this is the perfect completion of THIS task, and I think you've probably scared off the rest of us, what would you think of putting up the template you used so that the rest of us could come up with ideas?

Maybe we could retire this task and create a new one that would be to come up with 5 new cards to add to the pack?

Ideas? Comments?

You set the bar pretty high with this set. I laughed at alot of these cards. I look forward to trying (and probably failing) to best it.

I think what we all need to do once some others finish this task is to have the worlds most epic booster draft...oh the hilarity that would ensue.

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you all- I've been away (not by choice!).

I feel bad that I've scared some of you off from doing this task, but I do admit it's a bit flattering as well. Remember, there's no task that has been completed so well or so often that there isn't room for a new and original completion.

As for Journey to the End of the Night, well, I don't live in (or near) SF, so that complicates it. Distributing packs of these cards would be awesome, but would probably take a fiendishly large amount of work as well- it requires printing, cutting, and gluing for each card.

As for the template, I don't know exactly what you're asking for there, sorry. This is the program I used for the layout of the cards http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/

Yay!

Expansion sets rule! I especially like the "Fair and Balanced" card and "Baritone", since I'm a player myself (tuba primarily - which will give a clue to my Instrument Creation idea...)

Vote for I'd pay money for these. But it's probably more of an impact if one makes them themselves. It means more I guess.

Haha! I've done this. Dante's Card Maker. Made a whole deck of Magic cards featuring co-workers of mine. Fantastic.

i was thinking about this task just today, and was like, really, you'd have to be nearly deaf to hear stockhausen and bach and not be able to tell the difference. and if you'd ever heard classical music before surely you would be able to guess which one was bach. then i ate a sandwich.
