Unusual Edition by JJason Recognition
September 7th, 2010 3:56 AM[8/31/10 8:44:55 PM] JJason: Ok it's been like a year since I last did a proper task
[8/31/10 8:45:08 PM] JJason: So I need a task for my triumphant return to SF0
[8/31/10 8:45:14 PM] JJason: but I'm having trouble deciding
[8/31/10 8:45:19 PM] JJason: So I'm going to take binding suggestions
[8/31/10 8:45:20 PM] Dok: what are you considering?
[8/31/10 8:45:40 PM] Dok: Hm. I suggest a coptic binding; I'm told it's one of the easier ones for beginners
[8/31/10 8:45:51 PM] JJason: ha ha
[8/31/10 8:45:59 PM] JJason: I'll have you know that for book binding I am quite adept
[8/31/10 8:46:15 PM] Dok: Are you? Well then. Have you Unusual Editioned?
[8/31/10 8:46:35 PM] JJason: Ok, that's a suggestion and I bound to it
[8/31/10 8:46:36 PM] JJason: Done.
My chosen material was leaves. The stitched I used is called a stab stitch and it is useful for binding together a series of loose papers. All of the other bindings I know require the pages to be in signatures, which have to be folded. This would be harder to do with leaves. Writing was done with a Sharpie marker, which apparently writes very well on leaves. Who knew? The leaves are dark, which makes the photographs kind of hard to read.
I just filled the pages with random doodles and notes that came into my mind on the general subject of leaves. In my opinion you don't need words in order for it to be a book. The book is a the form, not the content.
Once created, I decided to return my book to the tree from whence it originally came.

just got back from SFZinefest, and yours is one of the most beautiful books i've seen this weekend. if you make four more, i bet you'll win the Isotope minicomic competition ; )
also why is falling corndogs weird? that's why they call it "Fall," no? the dogs all turn golden and fall off the trees. children and beggars collect them to eat, but most city folk hardly even recognize a corndog tree in the wild.
Hey, are you all graduated yet?
Neat! Let me know if you come back East, for a visit or to live...
I know where leaves come from.
You are indeed quite adept at book binding. And returning it to the tree afterwards was a nice touch.
