Make It Work by Tøm, Adam, GYØ Ben, SFØ Podcast, GYØ Daryl, Haberley Mead, Flea, Lincøln, Pixie, Sombrero Guy

February 23rd, 2008 12:53 PM

INSTRUCTIONS: Make it work.

Episode 3.3 is here! Enjoy!

This episode features your hosts Sombrero Guy and Pixie as they interview Artmouse.
This episode is a bit longer than typical, but worth listening to even at an hour.

Episode 3.2!

This episode features your hosts Sombrero Guy and Pixie as they interview Markov Walker.
This episode returns us to a more familiar format and duration. Politics are discussed!

Podcast series three is here! Enjoy!

This episode features your host Lincoln with a one on one interview with Sean Mahan.
This episode is also and hour and fifteen minutes long. That's a little bit longer than we would like it to be, but we figured it being the first one back after a looong hiatus and that we have a pretty special guest, the extra time was warranted.

Great job guys. I look forward to the next installment (and would be happy to chat with y'all sometime)!

Yes, Tom. Please put me on your list. It will have to be in a couple of weeks, however, as I need to get my Mac fixed before the power cord will be stable enough for the think to work reliably (half the time I'm typing one handed because I actually have to hold the power cord in a particular position for the machine to get power at all... right now I have it taped in place...).

So sign me up for a couple of weeks, or so.

so JTony, and GY0 innovators: what about a podcast vs. the podcast? hm? room for others? nothing official? that sort of thing?

don't get me wrong, it's a welcome idea whose time has come - just there's no reason JTony couldn't do his own, right? you're not just going to shut down your own production JT, yeah? Perhaps some kind of collaboration?

if only there was some kind of tool, or a group of tools held together in a sort of web or net-work that promoted international collaboration... oh. wait.

Thanks for votes and ideas re: another podcast. I agree there can be more than one (This aint Highlander), and encourage anyone to do another SF0 podcast if they like.

I will most likely be doing some sort of podcast, but for another task, and on another subject. A vidcast is appealing, but I sure don't want to add video editing back into my repertoir at this time... too many other things.

My original idea for a podcast was actually going to use SF0's built in phone-in audio feature... and I will still use that for something. Quality pretty much sucks, especially on a cell phone, but the idea of "phoning it in" still really appeals to me. Y'all will see when I've done something (which I have to wait to see how my computer turns out before I can even start, at this point).

well blimey, if it 'adn't'a been fer them wehrkin class cockneys and the, ahem, english blueblood fat cats (those damnable capitalists - don't go taking personal or national offense, now...) there practically wouldn't be a kapital! mr. marx got run out of europe not long after those crazy 1848 revolution times (great gramma of a more recent one) and settled out in soho. that's right, there's even a fancy restaurant there now down below his building. rumour has it his friends and neighbours [sic] paid rentage to a suffolk lord or lady or earl or dame or one of those types... bet they couldn't afford rent there now!

anyway, he did reside in london for quite some time, if i remember correctly it was right up until the paris commune. people take spring break pictures where he wrote the book, can't remember if it's st. paul's or the library, or what. but those types of photos are all over the place, people take 'em when they're students and then frame them for paperweights when they get their professorships in the social sciences. don't forget that he was there right in the damn midst of the best and worst of times... he must have seen it all!

as for suffolk, my googlebooks tells me that he refers to it in a few chapters of V.1 of that tome... most notably when he's going over agricultural production. he does the whole, "shit comes to the city from the countryside then gets eaten up and washed out the thames" shtick for awhile... actually pretty prescient when you look at envi.sci. textbooks, these days they still harp on a lot of the same basic rhetoric. but you haven't read it yet! or have you? i wouldn't recommend it, at least not in large dosages. he gets fairly ridiculous a little too often for my taste, but peppers his work with such strong language it's no wonder people of the western world cower at his name.

but yeah, london. marx is still there.

(no subject)
posted by Adam on February 27th, 2008 5:04 PM

Thanks for that. Better than if Id have asked my politics tutor.

I do have the Selected Writings of Marx hanging around somewhere. I must get round to them at some point, I get the gist of his work from studying politics but next year we get to look at it in much greater detail.

Though in the build and release, it was set up as a kind of intentional Crystal Method or Josh Wink sort of riff, which you can hear in its entirety here. So to get that I might have just started in the middle and then faded it out a few bars after the "mailbag!"

For the podtask, I get it now why you kept saying none of us did it: static cuts me out when I say "Boston," which was the fifth city I listed my first time thru--and you can hardly understand me saying it when I repeat the list! It's there. Nyah. :-p

I love how I keep trying to pawn Eleanor off with the cartoons. Great parenting, that. Kid can't take a hint though.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I don't really have a problem with longer ones. I mean, the assumption is that you have an iPod and can move about, listening as you walk or ride the bus or shop or whatever. You're not tied down. So why be tied down by time?

The main reasons for time constraints on radio and television is that they were live, stationary media and there had to be a way to arrange advertising for optimal audience saturation. You had to physically BE at the radio which pushed out the edia at only a specific time, and if you missed it, you were hosed, it was gone. You had to be able to time the events effectively, so having them on the hour or half hour made sense. Once there, you paid your admission by listening to the ads or sponsorship which happened near those same time markers.

Podcasting is on when you want it, off when you don't, and you can easily pick pu where you left off. Why balk at casts that are more than an hour. Do you really value your bus transit time so much you can't devote it to part of your favorite 2 hour podcast, especially when it contains people you actually know?

# Tom gets dropped mid-cast
# Apathy

posted by Tøm on March 16th, 2008 9:37 AM

To fill you all in, as of next week things should get better.

Main cast: Saturday release, Ben+Tom+Guest. Same as has been, but better quality.

PodLite: Wednesday release, Adam+Previous Guest (I believe Anna One is first, then if possible we'll go through previous guests to keep 2 guests behind the main one) This'll be short, and will be focused a lot on the interview.

Daryl will hopefully be recording something for one of them, undecided yet.

(no subject)
posted by Burn Unit on March 19th, 2008 10:56 AM

who said anything about pretired tasks? who told you to ask that question?
the old skool way is to use the taskDetail url, going to a task by number. The taskDetail url string is sf0.org/taskDetail/?id= . Thus: http://sf0.org/taskDetail/?id=1284 . Change that 4 digit number and you find pretired tasks. we're up over 3000 now. There's another way, to be revealed to you In Time, but "Should I divulge any of what I have seen - whether intentionally or unintentionally, directly or through oblique stratagem - my punishment will be swift in coming and indolent in its completion. I shall not suffer alone." This text will expire.

posted by Burn Unit on March 24th, 2008 2:50 PM

It's funny, but I debate internally if all the "shit we lost the connection again" should be used as evidence that you're not making it work and therefore I (who have already voted) must flag; or--and I tend to lean in the direction of this--if, by putting this out every week in spite of the disconnects, you're doing the very essence of making it work.

(no subject)
posted by GYØ Ben on March 24th, 2008 2:55 PM

I debate internally if that is funny or not.

Surely Making It Work is finding the connection after losing it.

Making It Work is being able to conduct a podcast without my help (regardless of whether I edited it together or not).

Making It Work is being able to hold an idea with very little source material for longer than two weeks.

But truly and honestly, the listeners are the ones that truly Make It Work.

(no subject)
posted by Tøm on March 24th, 2008 2:55 PM

I think that those are the breakages, and we get round them to make it work. If something isn't broken, it can't be fixed, right?

And if I reference Ben's original reason behind this being a Make it Work completion, we, GYØ, it, are working.

We made work for ourselves, therefore making ourselves work.

If we go ahead with an idea we had (not sure if it was in the final edit) you'll be hearing all the screw ups in the next podcast...

(no subject)
posted by JTony Loves Brains on March 24th, 2008 4:47 PM

And one more thing. What if you had a 'dear abby' section of the podcast. It might be interesting or funny if the guest had to answer both relevant and non-sf0-related personal advice questions.

Y'know "Dear Podcast, I'm in love with this chicken who sleeps with every dumb turkey that comes her way. I suspect she may be doing poultry porn. How can get her to stop her cheating ways and win her back? -Sad in San Fran"

or "Dear Podcast, Who should I vote for in my democratic primary if i'm interested in the issue of Hill reduction and removal?"

or "Dear Podcast, I walked around barefoot in a neon factory and now i can't walk. What can i do? and is there an antidote to kyle's not energy drink?"

or "Dear Podcast, I have a stale (close-ended) task in my list that i haven't had time to write up, though i did it almost a year ago, is it good form to post it that late?"

or "Dear Podcast, I think my microwave and alarm clock are giving me evil looks. How can i know if they are part of an evil uprising?"

or "Dear Podcast, my boyfriend and his best friend used to play sf0 actively and epically, but haven't even logged on in months. They don't respond well to my pressure and seem to have lost the drive. How can I get them to play again?"

or "Dear Podcast, if i've had two dreams about the same player whom i've never met, does that make me a stalker? If not, how can i become a more creepy stalker?"

or "Dear Podcast, how much sf0 is too much sf0?"

or "Dear Podcast, what do i do when people look at me like a loser when i talk about sf0?"

or "Dear Podcast, how do i keep my mom from knowing how much time i waste on sf0, now that she's learned how to check the site?"

or "Dear Podcast, I have a crush on this chicken, what task can i do to impress her and sweep her off her feet? How can i improve my tasking sexiness in general?"

or "Dear Podcast, I'm worried i can't maintain my drive or live up to my past glory on sf0, what can i do?"

or "Dear Podcast, I don't have time for both tasking and homework. Is it good form to make my homework fit a task, as long as i don't do it retroactively?"

or "Dear Podcast, I think i have a crush on a sockpuppet, what can i do?"

or "Dear Podcast, I come from a long line of brocoli haters, but my girlfriend practices regular brocoli cooking and eating. i'm worried she's going to raise our children as brocoli eaters. Are these differences too big to be overcome, or can you think of a way to save us?"

posted by Burn Unit on March 29th, 2008 5:41 PM

Such a good idea that it might produce enough material to warrant it's own separate area. which is to say, I propose some additional folks take on that mantle. That's not to say I don't think the Podcast can handle it, I just would argue that Bex' idea might be deserving of more in depth treatment than a few minutes in the podcast could do. that OR, perhaps some good soul(s) could volunteer to create this "Dear Abby" content in conjunction with all y'all?

Not to you know, horn in on the action or complain about anything (wouldn't dream!), but like back when JTony said "aw you beat me to it" I think it's easy for a perception that one channel is all that's needed once it starts to grow. And that actually tends to shut down otherwise-motivated people. For example, even in fearless mode, I would only dream of coordinating an SF0 podcast along the lines of this general one you've managed so wonderfully here, but I'd be quite interested in something more focused on either a specialized topic or on the kind of notion Bex raises here. Either way I'm volunteering.

Weekly events are a great idea also -- no not more clutter actually, because the events page is self clearing once a date is past, pretty much. Yet these casts could easily be found by ID. If anything, it's this page that's getting cluttered.

(no subject)
posted by Tøm on March 29th, 2008 5:44 PM

I've been looking around skype, and found if we used a skypecast it could be possible for us to run a LIVE podcast, for people to listen to us on skype as we run it. It's just an idea, nothing is finalised, but I just wanted to see everyone's thoughts on this first. I'm not sure if pamela(The program we use to record the podcasts) would work properly. So there's a chance it wouldn't be recorded, and you'd also have to have skype even to listen (to it live).

Anyways, message me with comments ideas, suggestions etc. Or even message the podcast account.

(no subject)
posted by Lincøln on April 2nd, 2008 3:05 PM

You could do this and record it. Just don't use Pamela. Use a recorder that's not attached to the computer. Just record the sound coming out of the computer live.

posted by GYØ Daryl on April 2nd, 2008 3:12 PM

Yeah, could do, there would just have to be a bit of a quality issue, and I'd need to dig out another microphone. But I think this could be quite a good idea. I'd have to look into it more 1st and do a few test tries.

live would be fun, but not at the cost of recording...

(no subject)
posted by Tøm on April 2nd, 2008 5:47 PM

Or, BOTH!

So, we record it whilst skypecasting, so if you listen in live you can hear all the screwuppery that's bound to happen and it'll sound a lot like this weeks with Lowteck, then we take the recording and edit it nicely and release the recording where it'll sound good with all of Adam's racial slurs edited out.

(no subject)
posted by GYØ Daryl on April 2nd, 2008 6:17 PM

I am going to try recording, but as I mentioned there is likely to be a loss in quality of te recorded version (nothng MAJOR) I think, that's why me and you are going to try a few test casts with anyone else wo happens to be online and in my contact list when we do it.

(no subject)
posted by anna one on April 2nd, 2008 10:06 PM

Yes, both. I have a need to listen, but not enough of a need to rearrange my already insane schedule around a broadcast- of course, if you wanted to have people call in, ask live questions and/or respond to things on the fly, that would be super-duper-awesome.

Besides which, I've just got to put it out there: You guys are sooooo much more interesting and intelligent than the inane mumblers on NPR that I suffer to listen to each morning for the newscast.

(no subject)
posted by GYØ Daryl on April 3rd, 2008 4:25 AM

Damn, I've just thought, I'm going to need to get a USB mic for this, or use a webcam with an integrated mic. Cause I don't have two mic ports at the back of my PC. I think I might have an old webcam with a decent mic built in. If not I'll have to try and find one cheap somewhere.

But yes, while listeners are listening, they can request to talk during the 'cast, so we can have LIVE listener interaction. THIS NEEDS TO BY AT LEAST TRIED. I'll run a test today later.

Has been tested, and pamela does seem to work still.

It has also improved the quality, cause I think skype are hosting it more than the conference holder's pc when it's a normal call. So, we've agreed there will be a skypecast for all the podcasts from now on. It will be hosted by the two hosts (2 of gy0) and the guest. Everyone else is welcome to listen. If you skype me (or whoever is running the skypecast, we will send you a link and you can listen to the live recording) this then gives us an oppurtunity to have 'callers' to join in and give their view/question at a certain point of the podcast.

So if you want to be IN the podcast and acually get to ask this coming podcast's guest (Lank) a question, or give your view on this weeks mailbag etc. GET SKYPE NOW and add us all.

Podcast #7 can has release!

This weeks guest is Lank!

Get it here.

About halfway through pamela decides to be a slag and record tom annd lank really late, so Daryl seems to be talking over them, or vice versa, editing has got rid of some of it (we thought it might have been up to something when it had been recording fine for 50 mins flat)

We have:
-- Meat
-- Grouposis and voting systems
-- 2 Audio questions
Enjoy!

Also, the skypecast idea failed, we got everyone on except Lank, and this is due to the fact skypecasts do not like vista pcs, so next week, why not try listening live (and hopefully we'll make it work this time). I'll post the link later during the week.

Also MAILBAG, we actually need some this week, and also questions for someone, although we're hoping most of them will be asked by you in the skypecast, although it couldn't hurt to message them first as a back up.

PODCAST CORRECTION!

Vena Nightmare just (thankfully) corrected me:

The phrase that Malcolm Gladwell (then of the Washington Post) tried to work into articles is "Perverse and often baffling", not "Complex and often baffling". And the usage had to be confirmed correct to be counted!

So I'm wiping the slate clean as of 12:42pm PST on April 6th, 2008: Whoever can use the phrase...

PERVERSE AND OFTEN BAFFLING

...appropriately on SFØ before Podcast #8 is released, gets a special prize...

Tom, I'm going to respectfully disagree and call on you to do better than that. There is nothing corrupt, wrongheaded or depraved about my misspeak, nor about podcast errors in general. Though the errors may be baffling on occasion, usually they have clear causes, and therefore are not baffling often.

Right, here's the situation regarding the podcast.

Most of older GYØ (apart from adam) are leaving school in the next few days, and will have exams for about the next month.

I know I will probably be revising etc most of that time and therfore would not like the extra hastle of the podcast of my hands for now. And I hope if Ben or Tom actually care much about their exams will agree with me on this one.

I've been thinking, and there are really 2 main options:

1. We have a break - in other words end of 1st series (I'd be more than glad to carry on, but not with exams on)

2. We pass over to the community, Haberley has been very helpful in the past, and I'm sure he'll be able to carry it on fine, maybe even improve it.

Anyway Tom'll be back either tomorrow or monday, so we'll see what he has to say then.
so let me know what you think about this

I'm happy to continue the podcasts when you lot leave, providing I've got a co-presenter anyway :) However, in regards to the end-of-season idea, are you willing to do the last one soonish, make it a nice round 10-episode series? Would make it feel a lot nicer all round, maybe even introduce the new series or summat as well...

Fine then, I thought you of all people would agree that we need to focus on exams. But fine if you want be like that. I know if didn't say anything like this you wouldn't want anything to do with the podcast.

And I do quote you from school when Tom said - oh as your back are you coming back to the podcast and you said - 'No, it's too much hastle'. So stop changing your mind every 2 seconds, IT'S SO ANNOYING.

I like the idea of actually doing 10 (I did text and say go on without me you know) and having it round off the series. Then we could return at a later date, with organisation, a guestlist, and more musical fun.

We leave at lunch on Thursday, we'll chat on Skype.

Just to let you people know, the 'cast should be going ahead the Saturday after next. That is the 6th (or closest Saturday to that, I've screwed the dates up in the past)

Anyone who wishes to join us, may do by pointing their Skype toward tdxiiifrozenhaddock and I'll add you into the large ongoing SFZero chat where you can bag the rest of us Skype dwellers.

Time TBC, when's good for people?

Hey Listen!

Flea found a cunning way around the terror that certain computers face when trying to access SkypeCasts. So any of you mac users, or people previously cast out onto the streets of not taking part can return in glory!

Remember, Skype isn't just for Podcasting, the SFØ Skype chat has been going for several weeks now, and is your one stop shop for amusement and hilarity! With regular casts where we engage the general public, text and online games and the regular banter that's your ticket to keeping in the know (as much as us).

Never fear at a site crash again, if it goes, you can join us rocking backwards and forwards clutching our knees in terror!

Remember, the Assisode is the 7th of June (That's this Saturday) at some time yet to be announced (One that fits as many of you as possible) and we'll be getting as many players as possible into it! It doesn't stop there, remember, there's only so much of GYZero's voices you can all take, regular 'cast host slots are always open to anyone who fancies it.

If you haven't already, go and install Skype and direct it towards tdxiiifrozenhaddock / draggles and we'll add you into the big chat where you'll find all the other Skyped up SFZerians. Don't forget to join the team.

Looking forward to your Skype add.

Just a quick reminder that the Assisode is this Saturday, and is looking to be in the early evening UK time, which seems to be early morning SF time, we could probably jiggle it around but we're juggling SF, MN, UK, Mexico and Australia here and everyone's all over everytimezone.

If you want in, but can't get on at the time, get over to Skype and speak to one of us and we'll see what we can do timewise.

Series 2 of the podcast is here!

Clicky!

This week's guests were Darkaardvark and Doktor Harmon, hosted by GYØ Tom (Until his internet kills itself) and Lincoln. Topics included:

-- Praxis of the however long it's been
-- New tasks
-- Sock puppets
-- Journey: LA
-- Shocking revelations.

This season will see more guests, more hosts, more chuckles and (hopefully) more casts! So if you want in, go download Skype at point it at tdxiiifrozenhaddock (among others) and we'll add you into the big SFZero chat, where these things get 'organised'.

If you want to appear on a cast, message one of us or drop into the chat.

Lots of fun, guys. Thanks!

Also, to my ear, DA sounds a lot like Zemaluco. So much so that having not paid sufficient attention to the guest introductions, I thought it *was* Zemaluco through the first half of the podcast. (Coincidence, or evidence for a massive, long-running case of very advanced sock-puppetry? You be the judge.)

I've seen Darkaardvark live... and I've seen someone who I was later told was Zemaluco, though he didn't introduce himself, so it could be a misidentification.

They're different sizes and can't be each other - unless, of course, that wasn't actually Zemaluco.

From what I've heard from Adam, there won't be unless it is somehow incorporated into the main cast. However, I could be wrong about this - and personally I'd lvoe to see PodLite make a comeback! Adam?

It won't get integrated into the main 'cast, 'cause it'd be even longer than Adam's already dreaded hour.

For the 3rd episode of series 3, recording on Tuesday, your hosts will be Pixie and Sombrero Guy, with artmouse as the special guest.

This time there's actually a bit of forward planning. In an attempt to return to the traditional format, we will have a guest interview section. And we want your questions! If there's anything you want to ask artmouse, get your questions to us by whatever means you see fit.

Also, if you have any good ideas for new sections we could include, please share them with us. The podcast is meant to be for the community, so any suggestions about what you'd like to hear on it are welcome.

Expect to hear us as soon as the recording has been edited!
