Tasks / Adopt A Sailor

Send a care package to a sailor, soldier, airman, or marine in Iraq. But not just any care package. We get tons of stuff on a regular basis, but very rarely is it something we really need or want. Your mission is to come up with the item or items you think will be so appreciated, you receive a letter in return (we typically don't have much time to respond.) To get credit for this task, describe what you sent, why you chose that particular item or items, and what you think the response will be. Bonus points awarded for a posted response to your care package. You can find addresses from www.anysoldier.com or if you'd like to send it to someone in Baghdad, contact me directly for an address.

Personally, and this is just my opinion as the task's creator, I think that looking at the lists of what people want is cheating. My vision for this task is for others to try and put themselves in our shoes - If you were here, what would you want? Or, maybe you have a unique perspective and will come up with something that the recipient didn't even know he or she wanted.
On another note, I kinda like the catch 22 idea. I've seen a few people around here reading "Slaughterhouse Five," but no one with Catch-22.
Before you get too wraped up in thoughts of sending a copy of Catch-22 with various random sections blacked out (not that I thought of that...) it's worth reading through the Where to Send list to see what people are asking for. A lot of it's soberingly basic stuff like coffee, shaving razors, "weapons cleaning solvents/ lubricants", or a jug for water. Also worth noting that most of the entries describe what a unit does, where they're from, and where they are (including many not in Iraq/Afghanistan), which is interesting to read through - in a weird twist, one person in Kabul said they only get anonymous "any soldier" mail at the moment for security reaons.
I really like the "imagine what a soldier wants" aspect, and I hope people do it their own way; I just had a "maybe I'm an asshole" moment reading through some of that list and thought I'd "share".
