Go into any large, well-trafficked shopping mall/plaza/department store/etc...(the more bourgeoisie the better) and ask 50 random passersby with merchandise something along the lines of "Excuse me, do you really need to buy that?" if it isn't yet bought or "Excuse me, did you really need to buy that?" if it has already been purchased. The line of questioning is only a barebones approach - feel free to expand as you see fit. In your proof, at least include one quantitative representation of your results.
