Tasks / Journey To The End Of The Night: Five Years Running In SF

This task is retired.

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

A thrilling fifth-anniversary pursuit through San Francisco. If you participated in this Journey in any way (as a player, chaser, or volunteer), please tell us about your experience.

This was my first Journey, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I managed to gather a group of friends, and we spent the 40 minutes or so before the game started pouring over our illegible maps, strategizing our routes. We quickly learned that once the game is afoot, all previously laid out strategies go out the window! It's like an action movie, a zombie apocalypse, and a really fun way to totally freak out the people walking out of Whole Foods.

We were caught pretty early on, but luckily, being a chaser is fun too. We stopped in a bar in Potrero for a beer, and discovered that pretty much every person in the bar was also a chaser! We had a blast in the bar, and later on Bernal Hill, swapping stories with other people, discussing strategies for next year. Such a great way to get to know the city, to get to know strangers, to discover what kind of assholes your friends might be during a real zombie apocalypse.

And how often do we get a chance to run at full speed, screaming like a maniac in broad daylight? It was cathartic and stimulating and the most fun I've had on a Saturday night while sober in a sketchy neighborhood with strangers and friends in a very long time.

My journey began with a wait in a long line--by the time I arrived at Justin Herman Plaza at 6:45pm, there was a line wrapped all the way around the plaza with many twists and turns, and it was barely moving. The organizers were trying out a new trac...

I have documented my journey in the form of a Google Map -- every twist and turn, every narrow escape. As indisputable proof that I was the one who accomplished this task, I present the token of my victory.

This was my first year participating in Journey, although I had heard of it before via the interwebz. This is also my first year in SF, just relocated here last September. The Journey was truly epic. I arrived around 6:15 to register and I'm gla...

This story starts at around midday, where I had Indian food for lunch. It would precipitate gas cramps that would later foil any attempt at running very fast to save my life. If I were living in the wild, Indian food would have gotten me eaten by a b...

First time player. Found out about it from Gizmodo.com. Arrived 6:15pm. Thought I was gonna be too late, but discovered just a small group of people; perhaps 100. The numbers grew very quickly. Thought going up Washington St. and turning left in...
