I think in the olden days before GPS, they just used string and a pole. Or, of course, it was really aliens.

I really hope that one in progress is going well. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
I'd like to know if anyone has luck using a GPS for this task. I think if you use Google Earth and a GPS it would be very possible to sketch out a way to do some crop circles or something, but I haven't tried it yet.
