Tasks / Street Spam Seizure

This task is retired.

Street Spam, also known as Flyposting takes over neighborhoods by placing illegal advertisements on street corners, utility poles and other public areas which are not provisioned for adverts. To some, these are a nuisance, but they exist due to the population's general lack of motivation to do anything about it. As well, in most areas law enforcement has not focused on policing these unsightly nuisances. Many of the subjects advertised are very similar to those in email spam such as weight loss pills, home refinancing scams and "work from home" promises.

Find an area that has been hit with street spam and remove the illegal signs. For signs you are unable to remove, jam their ability to influence by spray painting or otherwise covering the phone number or URL listed on them. Spend an hour or more to complete this task.

Post before and after photos. Bonus points for photos of a large number of signs being trashed.

please put some thought into which signs you take down. "lost puppy" or "political cause" signs should not be considered Flyposting. Even "small local business" signs are okay by me. Indeed, utility poles are an outlet for people who can't buy "real" advertising.

I could've done a variant of this recently, had I thought about it. A couple weeks ago, flyers for a psychic fair appeared on telephone poles in my neighborhood. I could've created slips to cover up the date and time of the fair, replacing it with "YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW WHEN AND WHERE."
