Missive From Strangers From Friends by Lincøln
October 17th, 2011 12:26 AM / Location: 40.776369,-119.2145I also decided that I would find these 100 strangers at Burning Man.
This lady that I would send all of the postcards to has never been to Burning Man and has always wanted to go. One year I bought her a ticket, and she couldn't go that week. But we often talk about it and how much she would love to go. So this seemed like a perfect fit.
I decided to do this project in 2010, the year I rode my bike home from Burning Man. So for the next year I collected interesting and unique postcards.
So I got my postcards all set. I got 100 of them. But I decided to send one of them myself. So I would bring 99.
99 postcards from strangers is still pretty good.
I also decided that I would take a picture of every stranger I gave a postcard to, so that later, when I see this lady again, we can compare. My pictures with her postcards and the things written on them.
Also this task came at a perfect time, because this lady used to live very near to me and I could see her whenever I wanted to, but she has since moved very far away and I don't get to see her, and we IM and she is not very happy where she is. She misses this amazing city and the beach and the weather and palm trees and life and friends. So she's in a bit of a funk. So she'll get 100 postcards from 99 strangers and hopefully will feel much better.
Also I love her.
So I took my postcards to the Playa and my plan worked pretty much perfectly, except that I didn't bring my battery for my camera, so I had to switch to my iPhone camera halfway through. But it was a success in that I got 99 strangers, and 97 pictures.
Read the descriptions on the pictures for more information.
1
This guy had a tent set up where he gave out free sun hats to fellow Burners. And on my first day, when I unpacked, I realized my hat was broken, so I went and got a new one from this nice man.
2
This woman was also getting a hat when I got my hat. She is also wearing a bra made out of a couple of teddy bears.
3
He was in the free hat tent. When he picked the hot dog with toothpaste postcard, he behaved like he was the luckiest man alive. It meant a lot to him and he was very proud of it.
4
She was out at the 4:30 keyhole plaza trying to get people to come eat grilled cheese sandwiches at her camp. She was reluctant to take a postcard, but when she saw the ninja, she changed her mind. She was still concerned about where she was going to put it, because she had a bullhorn in one hand and a mug in the other. But I convinced her that she was way more resourceful than she was giving herself credit for.
5
This man stopped to explain the geodesic dome that he was building that I was admiring. The reason I was admiring it was that it was made of wood. So I let him take a card, and he pointed me back to the depths of his camp where the designer of the dome was.
6
I forgot her name, but she was the one that designed the wooden geodesic dome I was earlier admiring.
9
Fellow campmates of the wooden geodesic dome camp. If you can, view this image at full size and read the postcard he chose. He was a big C.S. Lewis fan and he read to us all the entire card. He liked it a lot.
10
This man whooped my ass at 8 ball, and he was from a camp that was harassing and shooting things (including huge amounts of Playa dust) at passersby. This man spared me from getting assaulted because of my moustache. He invited me to sit with his campmates and harass the passersby. I sat for a bit, but the billiand table next door caught my attention and I went to play a game.
11
This woman is the one that brought the billiard table that saw my defeat. But she also gave me a chocolate chip cookie and a lapel pin in the shape of the Man with a jewel for a head.
12
This guy invited my to eat at his camp: The Fucken Eh Gourmet. They were all Canadian, and when I told him I wanted more of his awesome campmates to take cards he insisted on only taking one. He said the entire camp could sign the one.
13
This is the owner, operator and proprietor of the Dust City Diner. The Dust City Diner is a legendary Playa eatery, they are mobile and only operate for a few hours each day, from about an hour before dawn till a few hours after. In all of my years going to the Burn, this was my first encounter with the Dust City Diner. I ate a grilled cheese sandwich even though I don't eat dairy. Worth it.
15
This young man built and helped run the Black Rock Bijou, perhaps the coolest movie theater in the world. Yes that includes the original Alamo Draft House.
16
This is Jim Bowers. Legendary Playa artist. He created the very first art piece in Burning Man history in 1998 and this year he was responsible for the world's biggest clock (sundial in the day and mile long green laser hands at night), as well as the giant word Tribe painted with water trucks out in the deep Playa that you can see in the satellite photo.
17
Elaine Kung. Jim Bowers' assistant. She wrote out the way way the world's biggest clock worked in that white board behind her there. So people could understand how the clock worked.
18
This man was wandering around looking at the local city effigies that surrounded the Man. Blow up the image to full size and read the funny story about mail assault.
20
Also at the Phoenix effigy. He was a really nice guy. I believe his name was Eric. I met him a few days later working a pirate bar.
21 & 22
This guy was hanging out with us at the Phoenix regional effigy and he took an extra card for his wife. I let him do it even though I really wanted a picture of every person that wrote a note and even though he was a Red Sox fan.
25
He was also working the Hug Deli. I got no hug from him though. But he gave my friend Melissa a Long Tender Hug.
26
I saw these ladies sitting in their tent on I somewhere between 5:00 & 5:30. I saw them and walked into their tent and started talking to them and let them choose their cards. It wasn't until I got back to my camp that I realized how cute she was. The entire time talking to her I was concentrating on the cards, and the camera and her friend's giant chest tattoo.
27
I saw these ladies sitting in their tent on I somewhere between 5:00 & 5:30. I saw them and walked into their tent and started talking to them and let them choose their cards. Her giant chest tattoo kept me pretty distracted while I was telling them about my project though.
28
These men were just sitting next to their trailer in the hottest part of the day when I walked by and they said hello, it was hot so I stopped to chat with them.
29
These men were just sitting next to their trailer in the hottest part of the day when I walked by and they said hello, it was hot so I stopped to chat with them. This man was very funny and a pleasure to talk to.
30
This woman was manning the steam bath at the Sno Koan Village (or Heebie Jeebie Healers), they camp at the same place I can't tell them apart. But she was cute and let me into the steam room even after it was closed, so I gave her a card.
31
I saw this woman just walking down the street, and impressed by her body paint, I started talking to her. When I offered her a card, she snatched the first one she saw and struck this sinister pose.
32
This was a friendly man I met sitting in front of his camp. I didn't realize he lost the fingers on his left hand until I reviewed the pictures when I got home.
33
This man was holding a yard sale right at 6:00 and A or B or C or wherever in become a street out of Center Camp. He was right behind the Post Office. He wanted me to take the card, but I insisted that he take it and mail it himself. I told him that he could literally see the Post Office from where we were standing. I got a pair of nail clippers from his yard sale.
34
She was shopping at the yard sale when she heard me talking about my postcard project and wanted a card for herself. So I gave her one. Because she asked nicely.
35
This guy was operating a pillow fight ring. I fought in his pillow fight ring and then gave him a postcard.
36
This guy was operating a pillow fight ring. I fought in his pillow fight ring and then gave him a postcard. This guy reminded me of Lowteck. You'd have to hear him talk.
37
This was the man I defeated in the pillow fight ring. He gets beaten by a pillow, he gets a postcard. Fair.
38
She was just walking by when she saw me fighting in the pillow fight ring, and she jumped the ropes and joined in. It was a threesome! And she was quick and good. She had a hat, sunglasses, and a mask over her face, so we had no idea what she looked like, all we knew was what her tits looked like, because they kept bouncing out of that giant neckhole in that shirt of hers. When the fight was over, and I wanted her picture, she uncovered her face for the shot. I had no idea she was that beautiful when I was smacking her in the face with pillows. Would it have made a difference if I had known? Probably not.
39
These ladies were watching my friends perform at Center Camp. They were sitting behind me and kept talking to me throughout the show, and they were fun. So they got cards.

41
This man started talking to me as I was leaving Center Camp one night and he was clearly not as mentally sound as most people. But he was here at Burning Man, and I kinda wanted to see what he would write, so I gave him a card. Someday, maybe I'll get to read his card.
42
This guy was camped with my friend's camp, and when I went by to see her, she was nowhere to be found but I hung out in their camp for awhile and I talked to this guy for the whole time, so I gave him a card. He wanted the picture in front of his camp sign.
43
I found a cup on the Playa and it had a girl's name and an address on it, so I took it to the camp listed, and she wasn't there, but these guys were, so I gave them the cup and some postcards.

45
This guy was sitting outside of his camp and seemed like a good guy. And he was sitting next to a hot girl, so I stopped to talk to him. And gave him a card.
He was also wearing a laminated photo of a pussy with a cock in it. When I asked him about it, he said it was his cock and the pussy was his girlfriend's and he got the ID card from the Genital Portrait Studio a couple doors down.
46
This girl was sitting outside of her camp and she was hot. And she was sitting next to a guy who seemed cool, so I stopped to talk to her. And gave her a card.
She was also wearing a laminated photo of a pussy with a cock in it. When I asked her about it, she said it was her pussy and the cock was her boyfriend's and she got the ID card from the Genital Portrait Studio a couple doors down.
47
This woman worked at the Genital Portrait Studio. She was the barker out front trying to get customers.
48
This woman was out front of the Genital Portrait Studio. I gave her a card and took her picture because of that awesome top she was wearing.
49
She was in line for the Genital Portrait Studio, I talked to her as I was waiting in line and she asked for a postcard when she heard about the project.
51
She was working in the Genital Portrait Studio and she held up the ID sign around the genitals. I also convinced her to be my fluffer. Nice girl.
52
I stopped to talk to this guy because he said hi and had an awesome mohawk and great fingernails.
53
This lovely young woman was in line at a button camp where there were bins full of buttons being given away.
54
This young man was in line at a button camp where there were bins full of buttons being given away.
I totally blew this shot and overexposed it. It's a picture of two crutches leaning against a corrugated metal wall.
55
I met these ladies at a pirate bar where in order to get a drink, you had to spin a wheel and do what the wheel told you to do.
They guy working the bar was Eric who I met a couple days earlier working the Phoenix regional effigy.
56
I met these ladies at a pirate bar where in order to get a drink, you had to spin a wheel and do what the wheel told you to do.
I was stopped because she had to do a pirate dance in front of a camera and nobody had a camera, so I was enlisted to film her dance.
57
I saw these three sisters all painting boobs in Center Camp getting other girls ready for Critical Tits. Their own tits were amazingly well painted. So I gave them cards for their effort, and also I wanted to get a picture of their well-painted tits.

I think this sister was the most artistic of the three. She had a line of ladies waiting to get their tits painted by her.
60
This guy was hanging out in Center Camp watching girls getting their tits painted, and he heard about my project and wanted in.
The card he chose I got from the camp on the first day with the wooden geodesic dome.

This guy was hanging out in Center Camp watching girls getting their tits painted, and he heard about my project and wanted in.
He got his tits painted in solidarity.
62
We both liked the same piece of art in Center Camp and started talking about it, so she got a postcard.
63
This man was silently writing in a journal in the middle of Center Camp, when I approached him and asked him to write one of my postcards.
64
She was writing in a book on a giant table of books, so I asked her if she wouldn't mind writing one of my postcards.
65
This beautiful woman was sitting by herself against a wall in a corner of Center Camp writing something, when I asked her if she wouldn't mind writing one of my postcards. She was thrilled to.
66
These guys were working with the dust removal division, keeping the Playa free of dust. There were a lot of them working around Center Camp this day, but these two were from Ohio, so they're the ones I talked to and therefore they got my cards.

69
She was with her super cute friend and liked my project and wanted in on it as well. So she got hers too.
70
This girl had just gotten off of the Titty Totter, and she had so much fun up there, that when she got down, I had to give her a card.
72
This girl was passing by and saw me handing out cards, and wanted one too. When I told her about the project she was even happier to have asked for one.
73
This woman stopped me on the street to ask for directions, and was so nice I asked her to be a part of my task. She was obviously very proud of her tits too, because she very purposefully put the card below them when I asked for a picture of her face and card knowing the only way for me to get her card and face was to also get her tits. Good for her.
74
This girl was super cool, I met her in line to get snow cones at Sno Koan Village. And she showed me how to make a suicide snow cone with the flavors and portions she liked best. She was right.
75
She was my next door neighbor at R Bar and had been for quite a few years (we always camp at the same corner and they do too). I never really talked to her before, I just admired her perfect breasts from afar, so she still counted as a stranger for the purposes of this task.
This year R Bar had a new attraction which was called Tequila Mockingbird. There was a board with a bunch of mockingbird cutouts in holes, and you had to throw a shot glass and knock down (or kill) a mockingbird. If you missed you had to do a shot of tequila. And you had to keep throwing until you killed a mockingbird and could then stop drinking.
76
This guy stopped at my advice booth at my camp and asked for advice about how to go back to his regular life in South Carolina after having experienced this. He said a switch had been flipped in his consciousness and he couldn't go back to living the way he was before.
I talked to him for over a half an hour trying to work on getting his life in order. He snuck into Burning Man. Twice. The first time he got caught, roughed up and tossed out. But he tried again and found his way in. He had nothing, no money, no possessions and he couldn't go back home, and decided to go back to Portland and just be homeless until something worked itself out.
77
I met this couple at the perspective letter cubes out on the Playa. They were nice and both picked postcards depicting some kind of disaster. They didn't know what that meant. But they thought it probably meant something.

81
This woman was part of Aim High's traveling birthday party entourage. These ladies knew how to have a good time.
83
This woman saw me taking pictures of my friends (lefthandedsnail, Bastard and Nazzo Tinerlen, all SFØ players*) playing a game of bowling billiards. She wanted to know if she could take a picture so that I could be in it. I gladly accepted. And in return, I gave her a card to mail to a stranger.
*less active than not.
84
This stunningly cute woman was with the woman who took my picture with my friends playing bowling billiards.
85
This guy tried to swing across the loose trapeze lines. It was incredibly difficult and I only ever got across four before falling off.
86
I saw this guy in his camp as I was on my way somewhere but turned around to go back to give him a card. This man was the slowest talker I have ever met. I think he might have had something wrong with him, like maybe he had had a stroke of something. But as slow as he talked, he was super nice and liked my project very much.
87
These two ladies were riding on the porch of the mobile house. They were parked at the ashes of the burnt Man on Sunday morning.

89
This woman tried to get some ash from the burned Man, but I stopped her from picking up the ash she was trying to pick up, because I had been there just a little bit longer than she had, and I recognized that she was trying to pick up some ash, not from the fallen burned up Man, but from a B-B-Q that some guys had dragged out and dumped there a few minutes earlier. She was grateful and enjoyed her card too.
90
This is Peter Hudson. He created Charon this year. He also made the Crazy Monkey Tree a couple years back. this guy has made two of my favorite Playa art installations. He was busy tearing Charon down because it had fallen apart from overuse.
He was busy so I didn't want to disturb him, but I also really wanted him to get a card, so I thought about picking one out for him to cut at least the step of him choosing a card out. The card I chose was (obviously) Iron Man, but then I thought, no, I let everybody else choose their cards, I'll let Hudzo choose his too. He chose Iron Man (obviously).
91
This woman was all alone out in the deep Playa having a spiritual moment in this little shaded art shrine thing. She was almost in tears when I described this project to her. She was so happy to be a part of it.
92
This woman started talking to me at the swingset that powered the speakers that hooked up to you iPod to make music for your swing session. I was looking at how it was made when she asked if she could swing. So I plugged my phone in so she could have music when she swung.
94
This girl was blue. I stopped to give her a card because she was blue. I was headed back to camp because I was out of water, but I had to stop for the blue girl.
95
I met this guy right outside of my camp on 5:30. He was so thrilled because he had this comic book as a kid. He said he'd buy extra postage so he could mail this from England when he got home, because he thought that would be cooler, for her to get a card from another country across an ocean.
96
This woman had a awesome parasol and matching lace dress, so I stopped her and offered her the opportunity to be a part of my task. The only problem was, it was so bright out, and she was all in white, that I couldn't see well enough to frame it good enough, and I didn't get the card in frame. Oops.
97
These people were the last people to get cards. They lived right down the street and were super cool. I got photos of 97 & 98 but I somehow lost or never took the picture for 99. Oops. I remember giving away my last three to these four people. I told them they would have to fight amongst themselves to find out who didn't get to send one. And this lady said she'd share her card.

And then a few days later she sent me this email:
one of the postcards i got only said one thing on it. it said "he must really love you." it made my day. it really made my heart all warm and fuzzy
So wonderful. And the pictures are lovely!
This might be my favorite task you've ever done.
This inspires me
Thank you
This is pretty fantastic. ^_^ lucky you to frequent that event.
Epic and full of love. This is delightful.
at least you are very frank about your bias of giving post cards to cute women with their tops off, and your begrudging giving of postcards to their male companions ;p
This is absolutely wonderful and very inspiring.

A few days after getting back from the Playa I had this IM conversation with her:
thank you SOOOO MUCH for the postcards! i JUST got them today in the mail
they really mean the world to me
you're so beyond awesome
How many did you get?
lots! i'm not even sure. i didn't count
Wait.
they came on an appropriate day too...because i feel really sick today...so they brightened my day
I have a feeling you'll get some more.
oh boy
I'm kinda curious about what they say.
I didn't read any of them.
haha, you didn't read ANY of them?
Not one.
i'm surprised you didn't read any just out of curiosity
Oh, I'm curious, but I let the strangers I gave them to mail them all themselves.
Once I gave them out, I never saw them again.
they were all really nice, basically saying they hoped i could be there next year
Interesting...
one guy was from ohio and said to enjoy the beauty of the midwest...
I did meet two guys from Ohio who knew where you lived.
They were out in the desert with brooms and dustpans trying to clean up the dust.
Hilarious.
yeah i didnt think the dust could be cleaned up
It cannot.
Some of the postcards you're going to get are going to be from some very famous artists.
awesome!!!!
The postcard that has Iron Man on the front in particular.
seriously, thank you SO MUCH
my heart is really really deeply touched
Yay!
i need some love in my life
thank you
I only did it because I love you a lot.
i sure love you a lot too
Someday I'll read those postcards.
Should be fun to read.
and i miss you very very much
for sure
Also the nude beach postcard is from a pretty great artist.
i'll definitely keep an eye out
So the best part, the part you don't know, is I took a photo of every person with their postcards, so I know who each person is. So I can tell you about who they are someday.
oooohhhhh!!!! that is AWESOME!
i love it
Someday we can read the postcards while looking at the picture of the person who sent them, and I can tell you where I met them and what they were doing.
ooohhhhh! i greatly look forward to it
Me too.
I super love you.
THANK YOU
Love love love.
love love love to you
