Campaign Trail by Spidere

INSTRUCTIONS: Run for SFZero senatorial office. Lay out your platform. Engage in vicious mudslinging against your opponents and reveal secrets from their sordid past. Curry political favors from the powerful SFZero Players' Union. Take promo photographs of you kissing babies and shaking hands with community leaders.

If you receive 25 votes on this task you will be elected and sworn in. You will receive a senatorial badge (). You may then select a congressional committee and subcommitte (e.g. Ways and Means:Oversight, Appropriations:Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, etc.) and pass pork barrel legislation to benefit members of your group. The committee and subcommittee you select should reflect your character's personal goals within SFZero and your methodology for achieving those goals.

Today, I would like to announce my candidacy for SF0 Senate.

Now, a lot of what we do here, we do in a sort of joking way. I think that's a lot of fun, and it's one of the things that make this place wonderful. By doing things half tongue-in-cheek, we can often do things we'd never dare to do otherwise. In fact, most of this completion is done sort of jokingly. But before I get to that, I wanted to say a few things about how much SF0 has come to mean to me. I think that SF0 is an amazing place and I very much want to support it. I think it's a rare opportunity that we have here, to be part of a community whose sole purpose is to encourage each other to greater heights of creativity. To find other people who share that vision, especially across borders of city, state, or country. I am, honestly, honored to be among your company. This place is filled with people who do amazing things, and more importantly, it encourages us all to do amazing things. I'm proud to be a part of that, and I really do want to help it expand and continue. Thank you all for making SF0 the wonderful place it is.

All right, enough of the words and the seriousness. On to the fun words and pictures which prove I would be a great SF0 senator. :)

This campaign is about vision. I see the expansion of SF0 beyond geographical boundaries, to raise awareness of it throughout the country and the world. I see a great future for all of us here, and I think we can be strong as we build toward that future. I believe and know in my heart that it will continue to grow and become greater, and I want to be a part of that. My faith in SF0 is personal and strong, and it gives me the Drive and determination I need to keep tasking.

Standing Strong

Together, we can continue to spread SF0. Together, we can bring it to a host of people who would never have dreamed such a day was possible. Voting for me is just a small symbol of this trajectory of desire, but by supporting me, you are supporting the expansion of SF0. A vote for me is a vote for freedom.

In this campaign, I take inspiration from past great leaders of the country:

Washington. Lincoln. Jefferson.

Every photo shown here, including the one with Congresswoman Norton, was posed and taken exclusively for this task. Yes, I asked a stranger on the metro to let me play with her child and take pictures. Even more surprisingly, she let me. Her daughter, whose name is Alvira, is absolutely adorable, even moreso in action than in pictures.

Mmmm, I dunno. Does the graph projection means that kittens will be growing new wiskers as we vote? With just 5 votes we´ll be having 30 whiskers on kittens (15 on each side of the nose?). If you get elected, we´ll be looking at 60 whiskers per kitten. We have to make sure that that is a good thing.

Voting for Spidere = Good
posted by Spidere on October 21st, 2007 1:34 PM

Press bulletin:

My scientific advisers tell me that votes for Spidere will not produce a race of mutant cats. They suggest that the y-axis might be relabeled "(average) increase in roses and kittens", as it is not an increase in the number of whiskers per kitten or raindrops per rose, instead an effect of the total number of kittens and roses. After careful consideration of the original data points used to create the graph, they suggest that the correlation is due to people's general increased happiness, leading to the planting and appreciation of roses as well as adoption of kittens. They wanted me to point out that this does not necessarily imply causation, as my political advisers suggest, but that the increase in general happiness, goodwill, and insight might lead to both the roses/kittens as well as increased voting.

Thank you,
Spidere

Herø Bex,

As much as I would like to claim that votes for me would directly result in mutant kittens and raindrop-producing roses, I must stick to the actual evidence, and my advisers say that this is simply not supported.

However, I do believe that scientific research is crucial to the continued success of SF0. Funding such research is a high priority in my campaign. Mad science is no exception. For without mad science, how could we go beyond the bounds of what we think is possible? How could we show them, indeed, show them all?

If elected, I will of course act to support the interests of my constituents.

Villain,

I believe that this helps to answer your concerns as well.

Do we really need more kittens? I mean, with all the adult cats being put down in animal shelters, it seems socially irresponsible.

But, I'm a great fan of your tasking and thoughtful postings, and the rest of your platform sounds great.

You've got my vote despite all those cats languishing on death row. After all, no candidate is perfect.

Mutant kittens, on the other hand, is the sort of policy I can stand behind without reservation. At least until there are so many whiskers per kitten that the poor things can no longer eat. I can only hope we notice and stop voting in time. And I'm all for more rain, and or more roses.

Excellent point.
posted by Spidere on October 21st, 2007 4:46 PM

I will certainly have to take that under consideration, Loki. If my campaign does result in more kittens, it would be irresponsible to ignore that, in time, this would result in more cats. If necessary, we will do what is needed to make the campaign kitten-neutral, perhaps by purchasing kitten offsets.

It is also clear that mutant kittens seem to be quite popular with the SF0 voters. This will not be ignored.

It also gives me great pleasure to announce that Susy Derkins has agreed to join the scientific staff. I am certain that she will help us find an answer to both of these issues, and ensure that we do so in a responsible way. I have every confidence in her abilities; she brings a lot to the table, and I think we'll benefit quite a bit from having her on the team. Welcome aboard, Susy!

fireworks

I would like to thank you all for your votes. To have such an outpouring of support in such a short time is really quite amazing and wonderful. I hope very much to be a senator you will be proud to have voted for.

I thought I'd say a few words on the nature of the campaign, particularly as several others seem to be considering campaigns of their own. After that, I'll talk a little bit about the future.

There were several things which I think were important to this campaign's success:

1) A strong campaign. I've been planning this for months, and over that time collecting enough ideas and photos to make sure this was a good completion. This was crucial. It had to be good enough that people felt good voting for it. The better it was, the less hesitation in voting--if I wanted to get enough votes to be senator, I knew that I had to run a quality campaign. I don't know that I could get enough votes any other way.

2) Controlling the message. Monitoring the comments was very important, to make sure that the quality campaign never had any major stumbling blocks that would leave people unsure of whether they should vote for it. Susy Derkin's early comment, followed by the Villain and Bex, ensured that this campaign's debate would be about mutant kittens. As it turned out, that seemed to be an issue I would do all right in.

3) Timing. I posted my completion during a relatively slow praxis time, to make sure it had enough time to be up there and be noticed. More importantly, I posted it soon after a series of tasks I was proud of, to try to make sure I was on people's minds and that they had a favorable impression of me. I also posted it quite a while after any other recent campaigns; I didn't want to be seen as competing with any of the other fine senators, nor any of the upcoming campaigns (14 in progress, if I remember correctly). Besides this, the speed of the campaign made controlling the message, and thus keeping a strong campaign, much easier to do.

4) Personal appeals. This was both the most effective part of the campaign and also the part I was least sure about. By crafting personal emails to a number of SF0'ers who have helped me along the way and also new SF0'ers whose work I am excited to see more of, I both ensured quick awareness of the campaign (advertising) as well as getting a rapid mobilization of those I felt likely to support me (get out the vote). But the thing this felt most like in actual campaigns was fundraising. I had to make personal appeals, and a good number of them; writing these ended up being much more draining than I had expected. Exhausting, very important, and very dependent on making a personal connection--very much like campaign fundraising.

While I could have sent a form letter, it was important to me, personally, that I try to make each one meaningful. As I reached the end of the people I felt I could say something meaningful to, I stopped. Now that it's over, I'm very glad I did it. I got to write to a number of people whose tasking I admired, that I wouldn't have otherwise connected to. And I got to tell several people here how important they are and have been to me here. It was really nice to be able to show people some of the impact they have, and to honestly thank people I am honestly grateful to. It warmed my heart to remember the things that drew me in to SF0, and the things that amaze me every day. Thank you for that opportunity.

5) The mutant kitten platform. Who knew this was such an underrepresented portion of SF0? I was lucky to be able to tap into it.

Now, regarding the future.

I certainly plan to focus most of my efforts on building up a community of DC0 members, to try to create a local outpost here. I also hope to make connections with other East Coast SF0'ers such as rongo rongo and Marshall Electric, and to see if we can get some inter-coast tasking to happen. Next spring, if things go well, I hope to be in position to run our own local Into the End of the Night.

I will also claim leadership of the Science and Technology Committee. While it is not normally the most prestigious or influential committee, I am happy to sit back and work towards a better future, to support work that will ultimately transform our world. It is also crucial to ensure that the mutant cat lobby be represented. While I cannot promise, and never have promised, a mutant kitten at every doorstep, I will do my best to encourage the development and adoption of such kittens.

On a personal note, I hope to be more personally encouraging to new players. As I was writing my letters requesting support, I realized that the support of players when I was new here was really important to bringing me into the SF0 community, and feeling like this was a place that valued my creativity. My correspondence with Herbie Hatman helped me realize that I hadn't been doing this for new players as well as I could be. In the future, I hope that when I waver on whether or not to vote, I will fall more easily to encouraging new players. When I do not vote, I hope to comment and try to draw new players in. And I hope to always be available to shed some light on the confusing pieces that make up SF0.

Let me also mention, to those who do not know, that in the U.S. Congress, DC has no voting member either in the House or the Senate. I'm very glad that SF0 has elected a DC senator, perhaps in a nod to Equivalenz, but for any of you who can, dcvote.org has an easy way to make your congressional representatives aware of your feelings on the matter, if you support giving DC residents a voice in congress.

I've been accused of being wordy before, and I certainly lived up to that here. So let me just finish by saying that I'm very glad to have been elected as SF0's most junior senator, and that I hope to be a good one. Thank you.

This sudden outbreak of exciting new senatorial completions rekindles a certain something.

Lord Acton was a wise man. Perhaps it is fortunate that I am not a great man, though that does not exactly make me a good one either. It is clear from my few attempts that backroom politics are not my strength--I will strive to keep my dealings open, though I know it will be difficult.

The extra "e" is far from accidental, and I consider no interpretation exclusive--I must admit, I had been thinking of it as either spy-dare or occasionally spy-der-ee, but I am very taken by the notion behind spi-deh-reh. Perhaps the most appropriate pronunciation of all, given that part of my inspiration comes from "Erehwon".

In addition, after contacting Shaenon Garrity, the author of the amazing Narbonic, my very favorite web comic. I am proud to claim the support of mad scientists. I plan to continue to fight for mad scientists everywhere.

zemaluco: I am chastened. My ratio (297 cast/380 received=.78) is not so strong as yours (396/412=.96), it is true. I'm not quite sure what the ratio to be aiming for is. Senator Burn Unit believes it should be 1:1, and from your words, I suspect you agree. It certainly seems like a reasonable rule of thumb. I do think it's worth considering another sentiment of Burn Unit's, however--that the true currency of SF0 is not votes, but collaboration.

I am chastened, though, and that is never easy; I will try to be less conservative with my voting, and thank you for bringing me another way I can become better. I am sorry that I have this flaw, but now I can work on improving it. Thank you.

It's surprising...in running for this office, I think I may have learned more about myself than in any other task. And not all good things, obviously. But I guess you don't always get the lessons you want to learn; and you don't always like the things you're taught. But when you get schooled, it's best to take the blow and learn the lesson. There's value in that...it's just a hard value, sometimes.

posted by Burn Unit on December 13th, 2007 3:55 PM

well, my theory, which is not currently on my user page, is that I believe the game is more fun when our votes given/votes received ratio is closer to 1:1. maybe that's not quite the same as saying "You should..." It was more about having a reaction to some player (exactly who is now lost in the mists of memory) who said in the comments they couldn't vote because of some reason. It just seemed so backhanded at the time. I was also pissed because it didn't seem to follow any rhyme or reason. It just felt like a backbrain reaction that wasn't thought through. It also had to do with the fact that I seemed to be reading a lot of comments at the time that were "oh if this task wasn't retired" though that's not really a problem now. Anyways, I just disliked someone's tone and I don't know exactly what was said. But I had gotten quite free with the votes without feeling like I'd devalued my votes.

I dunno, I mean, I haven't gotten the impression people don't give a crap about receiving a vote from me. I still get thank you notes--that's something I haven't been as diligent about as others have--

I didn't mean to be so dogmatic about it. People are gonna vote if they have great proofs to vote for, and it would be disingenuous of me to expect someone to suddenly start voting en masse for old completions. They can't really force it. (though backlog hunting is fun)

Also, guys, it's kind of weirding me out to hear ideas I've mentioned get all debated out by people. What the hell is up with that? Should I be writing this shit down so I can keep my own theories straight?

1:1 ratio?
posted by Charlie Fish on December 28th, 2007 1:49 AM

I agree that it pays off to be generous with your votes, but I don't think a 1:1 ratio is necessarily ideal. I think I would have had to vote for every single task since I joined to achieve a 1:1 ratio - and that would completely devalue my vote.

Yes, I know I can go and vote for tasks that were completed before I joined SF0 to boost the ratio, but that's not sustainable. (As it is, for fairness, I decided when I joined that I would not vote for anything that was completed before I joined. Since I joined I've tried to read every completion on the praxis.)

I think a 75% ratio is a better aim. If your ratio is much less, you should be giving more votes. If it's much more, you should be trying to get more votes.

There have been 1076 tasks completed since I joined SF0, of which almost 19% were flagged. Also subtracting the 42 tasks that were mine, that leaves approximately 830 vote-contenders.

I have cast 407 votes - so in other words, I've voted for just under half the eligible completions that have been posted since I joined. Which feels about right to me.

But my votes cast : votes received ratio is a mere 65%. (And, looking back, I realise that I did vote for a few completions from before I joined, which actually dilutes my ratio very slightly.)

So what I said before about having to vote for every single task since I joined to achieve a 1:1 ratio is an exaggeration. In fact, to bring my ratio up to 1:1, I would need to vote for three quarters of eligible completions (rather than the half that I'm currently averaging).

Out of curiosity, I checked out the cast:received ratio of every player on the top score page:

Tom 229:519 (44%)
Lank 511:765 (67%)
Me 407:626 (65%)
Burn 765:680 (113%)
Spar 664:628 (106%)
Adam 63:395 (16%)
Lincoln 388:520 (75%)
anna 451:628 (72%)
lowteck 484:826 (59%)
p00n 187:563 (33%)
Eddy 442:496 (89%)
zem 451:484 (93%)
Bex 437:573 (76%)
Bear 269:531 (51%)
Kitty 387:490 (79%)
Ben 131:340 (39%)
Spidere 373:440 (85%)
Vixen 350:439 (80%)
Mink 365:409 (89%)
Villain 186:342 (54%)
Loki 337:441 (76%)
Daryl 43:228 (19%)
iwsfutcmd 251:397 (63%)
Rainbow 64:339 (19%)

Draw your own conclusions.

I personally disagree with aiming for a 1:1 ratio. I think it's more meaningful to think of the proportion of eligible tasks that you vote for over a given period of time. As for what that proportion should be, that's up to you. I'm happy with my 50%-or-thereabouts.

Well done, Mr. Fish +1

For some more analysis, including some on voting, check this out. In particular, because of the way votes for collaborations work, I think you're completely right that aiming for 1:1 would not be sustainable.

It should be noted, I've brought you to a nice, round 360.

You've won me over. A great showing of drive, coupled with digitally tangible improvement. Deep down, I always wanted to vote. Besides, according to Fish, you're not doing too bad, overall.

Though the challenge still stands...

ouroboros, again, again
the smoke rising, the pattern filling in
I see an invisible face, the sun shining through it
and dark webs flung from eye to eye
the earth cracks, the lists shudder
the day is coming we must prepare
two figures loom giant, their eyes ablaze
The Threefold Senator is Coming, this proof dooms it clear enough for a child to read; as clearly as the gleaming pate of The Interrex whose own Day of Coronation nears. Reckoning arrives! Their combat shall burst out in a river of praxis!

Highest all time score is that right?
Either way 71 votes that is mighty impressive.
Deserves a badge or something.
Truly the Senators Senator.

Although in my eyes that would make you a symbol and indeed a figurehead of hegemony!

To the hedges!!! We shall prune the hegemony!

After the false and spurious claims made by Dr. Fishman, I thought I should provide some additional evidence of my love of animals, both taken today.

First, as evidence that I get along with dogs as well as cats:

Second, the power of feline laser eyes which I could bring to bear if needed. Science advances, and we must embrace it. I support biomodification as well as cybernetic enhancement!

Spidere I publicly challenge you to debate the issues.

This debate should be televised through the interweb.

You will not have the power of photoshop to push forward your positions of energy and Eleanor Holmes. You cannot expect that taking children's candy and then making them take a picture of you as a supporter, yes I know the awful truth Ruth, Kaneisha's parents told me that you held her banky hostage for that photo.

This debate, although live should be recorded and a public record made for those who are not able to attend.

I challenge you as your foe.

I will go and make jello with little oranges for my children while I await your response.

You cannot hide behind a platform of photoshopped promises and baby extortion.

Come out and address the issues, or the envelopes.

I propose that this debate take place on Dressing Gown Appreciation Day.

Brock,

I am tired of the accusations of underhandedness in general, and photoshop in particular, in my campaign. They are baseless and, more devastatingly, at this point they are simply dull. I have no desire to see you as my foe, and I strongly suggest that you do not desire me as a foe either.

The debate you propose is certainly an interesting idea, however. Clearly, you do not have the standing to take part in such a debate. However, if you can get at least two other standing SF0 senators to take part, I will debate them. We will also need to decide beforehand on a list of important issues to debate as well as a specified standard and reasonable format with an excellent and trusted moderator.

As I will be celebrating the holiday on Dressing Gown Appreciation Day, I suggest one week or two weeks following, which will both allow us all to celebrate the holiday with our friends and loved ones as well as provide time to arrange for a proper debate. This is not something to be thrown together without sufficient preparation.

Best wishes,
Senator Spidere
