presumably this doesn't include stuff you already own and are using for a task?

Not quite sure how to make this work (e.g. what do bonus points mean for a task that's supposed to deduct them?)...

but it's a good idea

I like the idea but it needs to be more specific, lest all our scores get decimated.
posted by Jason 7au on May 24th, 2006 3:39 PM

Okay, not decimated, per se, but it's going to hit all of us.

Do the BartPA need to deduct points for hopping on public transit? -1.5 for each bus ride, -2 or more for each BART ride? Will we all be penalized for driving or taking public transit for task meet-ups?

Does Biome lose points for spending money on landscaping materials? Going to the store to buy strange vegetables and fruit?

Will UofA be penalized for buying art supplies?

Could Equivalenz suffer for money spent on technical components (some items most people don't have lying around that are needed for some Equivalenz tasks: LEDs, lumber or other materials for the housing of a public terminals, transmitter set-ups for pirate radio)?

Should the Humanitarian Crisis be kept down for similar reasons (printing flyers, buying chalk, concocting energy bars)?

Do we all need to barter for these things? Does using electricity count? Internet costs? What if someone buys recording equipment to do audio SF0 tasks?

Don't get me wrong, this is a great idea, but some guidelines need to be set. Would supply acquisitions and travel costs not count as consumerism? And also, is this merely opt-in for those who feel their Score is too high (...it could happen), or would this become a new rule? I don't want this to go away, I just want this to be discussed and pondered properly.

It was drunk, i was midnight....probably should have written a little theory behind this.

Responding to Sean and Jason in that order:

If it is possible, strip out all data that is not a number from the "how much" field to get the negative points. Votes work the same as they do everywhere else.

This task might not be for everyone. The idea was for people to take it as far as they feel they should. People that work hard on it might get votes that make up for negative points.

My personal take on it: YES, if I bought something (bus transfer, paint, candy bar, DAT recorder, electronic components, etc) just to complete a task it should be tracked. If you buy a DAT recorder to fufill a task but was already planning on getting one report only a fraction of the cost.

When i was in college i remember the people from art class and myself buying all kinds of crap for projects we were doing that ened up just sitting somewhere, or just getting thrown away. This task is to encourage people to be more resourceful and creative, and to interact with the city in non-consumer ways. I don't want to complete tasks by throwing money at them.
