Tasks / Erection

Explore symbolism in architecture. Erect a rigid free-standing structure at least 30 feet high. Size matters, of course: the higher, the better. Staying power is also important, so try to keep it up for at least an hour.
This task will be more enjoyable if you collaborate. And remember, construction can be dangerous. Don't forget to wear protection.

Anyone in the Bay Area have access to scaffolding?
Scaffolding? Cherry Picker? Come on, I've done this twice with nothing but logs and rope! Anyone interested in doing it oldskool, give me a call!
(i'm interested in post industrial methods, too!)
For the record, this task has a previous life, fraught with Failure. Learn from experience young ones.
Yes, Inky, but I think we had in mind some much larger, sturdier building materials. Scaffolding and Cherry pickers are to assist in the construction, not to produce the final product.
Tony, you really built a 60' high structure out of logs and rope? Can I see some photos? That's insane.
Everyone, always remember- safety first.
No, not a 60 foot tower, but a 30 foot tower on two separate occasions. Boy scout thing. Also built a bridge... each anchor being about 15 feet high or so and about 60 feet apart or so. And all with just logs and ropes. No nails, no screws, no bolts. It isn't that hard once you get the main construction idea.
I don't have any pix of stuff I've done, but here's a typical example of a scout pioneering lashed pole tower project... this one apparently 13 meters.

JTony, I once climbed a thirty foot structure that was built with nothing but bamboo and rope.
Did you build it?
I didn't build the porcupine, no. That porcupine looks a little taller than 30 feet, though. I'd say it was twice that if not more. And way more complex than what I built. We Eagle Scouts are a simple people.
Okay, Tony- that's pretty neat. Man, Boy Scouts get to do all kinds of good stuff. In 4-H I just kept getting sent out into the wilderness to clear trails.
Advice for those of the younger generation who may find themselves facing a similar predicament:
Don't tell everybody that you're not allergic to poison oak. Even if it is true.
So yes: that's certainly an option to complete the task. Not what Lank & I are trying to work out, but an option.
Lincoln: So jealous of your playa photos.
Like I said, I'm interested in post industrial technologies as well.....
Now, what can you do with steam?....
I would so totally roll over like a puppy to work with this group's heroic steam engine masterpieces. In case anyone was wondering, that is.
Oh, and they have mustaches of mighty excellence as well.
Dear Anna,
I never said anything about your ska-foldin' cherrypickin' process; and you've been around long enough that I don't consider you a "young one". I'm figuring that with the points this is worth, that completions will be fantastic. I'm just referring to the history of the project, as the old comments (from the first incarnation of the task) apparently all got deleted.
Love,
jtony...
recently for an arch project i had to reactivate my long dormant boy scouting skills.
i was amazed at how much of the lashing i remembered.
so if you're doing that, hell yes i want in.
besides, scouting seems to an appropriate source to draw on for this highly nuanced task.

For all the ridiculous fretting I did for this task, it was surprisingly easy. I obtained the help of my step-grandfather for all his knowledge of building and my worries were instantly all for naught. Seriously, he is made of of win. Things that ne...
