Tasks / Flood Of Legendary Obfuscations

This task is retired.

What is legend? What is real? What is a real urban legend? What is a hoax of a hoax? When a thousand new urban legends appear, will they know who made them? Quod ipsos custodes custodiet?

Fabricate an urban legend, using your locale as its setting. To receive points for this task two things need to happen:
1) Your urban legend needs to gain enough critical mass to appear in either a newspaper, television news story, Snopes.com, or About.com.

2) Furthermore, the relationship between your fake urban legend and this site must evade detection. In short, if your urban legend is debunked or makes an appearance on a debunking site, it better not be because they discovered its genesis as an SFZero task.

Obviously proving this task exposes it to risk of its own self-destruction and therein lies it's fragile beauty. Great creativity in documentation and proof of this task will be required.

As a folklorist, this goes against everything i believe in. CREATING folklore...its just... arg. NOOOOOOO!! wrong! bad! FAKELORE!!

but nevertheless, as a folklorist... heh. i'd be pretty damn good at it.

Just ask the Grimms.

Fakelore...nice.

Well, sometimes we must challenge ourselves to grow... and I'm perfectly comfortable with the belief that not every task is a fit for every player. Will it really be fake, after all? By which I mean the question is, can a fake urban legend work, can it "make the cut" into the cultural consciousness? The folk may be prone to forwarding the stupidest tripe but they're not actually That stupid. Will it spread without being something relatable or recognizably a product of the volkswerk?

And to someone in your position, I'd say the question might be: is folklore the center and fakelore the margin? Is there truth at the center and myth at the margin or a further margin where manufactured myth resides? Are real myths more real than history or are both the instruments of a violent hierarchy we agree is reality? Also, if this goes against everything you believe, you might enjoy spending some time with those beliefs before you start this task... :-p
