Just to clarify: of course you can put the car in drive. You just can't touch the gas pedal.

doesn't 'remaining in idle' mean just that - not putting it in drive?

Vehicle clutches
While engaging the clutch, the engine speed may need to be increased from idle, using the manual throttle, so that the engine does not stall...

I always considered "idling" to be a term for putting it in drive, and not touching the gas pedal, thus intentionally going at a ridiculously slow speed for whatever reason. That's how I always heard it, anyway. I've had one on one "idle races" in the past, and they're surprisingly fun and nerve wracking, as well as completely absurd.

Though it would be interesting to see the interpretation of such a race where they aren't even allowed to move, so whatever.

You need an automatic transmission to do this. Manual cars cannot move in idle (well, okay, they can, but only downhill). Autos can.

Nobody said you couldn't push....who knows, it might help. It doesn't say they can't be idling in neutral, either. Hooray for loopholes!

Idling means not engaging the throttle, regardless of the state of the clutch, at least to me.

Also, Real Men can start their manual on level ground while idling, and then proceed to gain enough speed to shift gears.

Alas, it does not seem there are many SF0ers in NC, or I would definitely be up for this.

(Am I alowed to go tune the idle setting for the race? ;) )

Tuning your car? Only if you're one of those damn dirty Aesthematicians.

(Actually, getting a bunch of cars to function as sort of a handbell choir somehow and play tunes on them would be pretty impressive.)

Tuning of vehicles is clearly well within the BARTPA trajectory.

I wonder how hard it would be to tune the horns... probably not that difficult. Engine sounds would be harder.

I wonder if you could do something like the cell phone symphony...
