I really want people to do this. Some tips from online:

  • "Most developers (now or even 50 years ago) will have driven steel pins into the ground at the corners of a lot." (from here) Not sure if this goes for urban areas, though.

  • Is this site helpful? Whether you use their data service or not, they have helpful links. Including to San Francisco's totally spiffy but IE-only in-browser GIS app.
