in heat or cold we will run
rain or shine, we will run
rise of cool green sleep or fall of fiery brave life we will run
we will run and they will give chase and the city will be ours again
and we will remember the sweet kiss of concrete beneath our feet
we will dance the joyful bitter of pursuit in our hands
our hearts leaping in our throats
our lungs bursting for fear and wonder or just for laughter for laughter
in the brief flash of day above the grave we will run

Date no longer subject to change.

From The Bridge september 08 issue:
Mysterious street game to start in Marcy-Holmes

On Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m., Sixth Avenue Southeast and Southeast Main Street will serve as the starting point of a citywide street game known as Journey to the End of the Night. Essentially a combination of a race and tag, the event tests participants' stamina and wits for about seven miles as they pass a series of city checkpoints while evading capture from fellow participants.
(...)
"The goal of Journey to the End of the Night is ultimately about experiencing the city in a heightened state of awareness," he said. "To see the streets themselves as grounds for adventure and risk-taking, and to claim the public spaces for the sake of fun."
--Hayley Nelson

doing this in a city that is not incredibly familiar to me sounds very difficult! maybe i will have to go to minneapolis in advance and get the lay of the land. and skate with the minnesota rollergirls. or whatever. i've never been there.

for the record, if they ever do a Journey to the End of the Night Boston, i am NOT going.

It would hardly be the first time someone played Journey in a city unfamiliar to them.

Plus large pieces of Minneapolis are a nice friendly grid! It's when the grid's edges are in unexpected places that you run into trouble.

posted by Dax Tran-Caffee on May 1st, 2008 4:18 PM

I see that there is a Rollergirl bout on the 20th of September. This would not be a good date to hold the Journey MNØ, if you're still looking at that date, BU.

About getting to MNØ, I plan to use my new rocket pack.

For what it's worth, I'd never been to Chicago before... while there I not only completed a full manifest (along with my two fine compatriots-in-disguise) but also evaded arrest while dragging around a 1700-tonne tower...

So that means you're coming?

I broke into an immediate and full on sprint. I was running with abandon, I had no idea where I was heading, and I didn't even care. After two full city blocks I looked over my shoulder and he was still behind me! I was quite amazed, I had expected him to give up by then, as he wasn't gaining any ground on me, and I was at a full sprint. I was figuring he would realize that he wasn't going to catch up and stop wasting the energy. Oh, was I wrong. The determination he possessed was amazing and appalling at the same time. I continued running, knowing I couldn't slow down.

Finally, I have new shoes. They truly make me run faster and jump higher. No joke. I lept a mailbox, a dumpster, climbed the railing instead of the stairs to my front door, and ran across several lanes of traffic looking for the man who sells soccer balls on the corner (no luck).

But can I handle the technology that I have avoided for so long - or will the power consume me? This remains to be seen.

P.S. Chucks are still better for pushing pedals, no contest.

I don't know the names of the team of two runners who were jointly awarded the runner trophy, but they were both local.

If I'm not misremembering the chaser trophy went to Dela Dejavoo, for captruing four yellow armbands (they count double!) and one blue one.

I will add that Dela won that chaser trophy with only *45 minutes* of chasing, having been turned near the very end. I'm sure she will be elaborating on this experience in the forthcoming Team CG0 & Friends praxis.

(no subject)
posted by Lincøln on September 15th, 2008 11:56 AM

Did Dela Dejavoo have roller skates on? And horns?

(no subject)
posted by Julian Muffinbot on September 15th, 2008 6:10 PM

Skates were prohibited, sadly.

Horns were not prohibited, but we were stripped down to only the bare essentials necessary and horns did not qualify.

(I totally want to be a chaser on skates if there is ever another Journey. if there can be a staff chaser on a bike, i think a staff chaser on skates would be pretty awesome too)

(no subject)
posted by Darkaardvark on September 15th, 2008 7:25 PM

Skates give an edge to speed but are also much more maneuverable than bikes. I think that'd have to be tested out some.

Also, "if there is ever another Journey"? Are you kidding?

(no subject)
posted by Lincøln on September 15th, 2008 9:10 PM

I'd let a skate chaser into LAØ's Journey next summer, because as fast and maneuverable as they are, they're also a big hinderance in that they can't take bad surfaces like grass or sand or cobblestone and it's hard to jump over walls. A bike chaser can always ditch or ghost ride the bike to add even more terror, a skate chaser has to keep the skates on.

Was there a chaser with those leaping bouncy stilts? I'd love to have one of those next year too. As it is I'll have the most terrifying chaser ever next year.

(and as a side note, I think any chaser, staff chaser or not, should qualify for the trophy)

(no subject)
posted by teucer on September 15th, 2008 9:25 PM

Ooh! You should have a pogo-stick chaser!

Also, the trouble with giving trophies to staff is that they ought to be worrying about what is good for the game rather than letting their motivations be divided. I for one would have stayed at checkpoint two for a while if I were in it for the ribbons.

(no subject)
posted by Lincøln on September 15th, 2008 9:37 PM

Whereas I think a staff chaser's job isn't to act like a threat to scare the runners, but to BE a threat to scare the runners. Also, I'll work on the pogo stick thing for next year.

(no subject)
posted by teucer on September 15th, 2008 9:48 PM

I agree. But it's to be a threat in the places that don't have enough, and not in the places that are already sufficiently perilous. It's worth striving to distribute the threats properly, in my opinion.

(no subject)
posted by Lincøln on September 15th, 2008 9:56 PM

I found making a sufficiently circuitous route negated such a problem, as there were many many routes to take to get to the next checkpoint and the next. Next year's LAØ route will be more straightforward and linear and we'll see what kind of problems the runners have with chasers.

Next year the chasers will again be advised to capture as many runners as possible, and the chaser with the most blue ribbons will win, no matter if they started the game as a chaser or not.
