in heat or cold we will run
rain or shine, we will run
rise of cool green sleep or fall of fiery brave life we will run
we will run and they will give chase and the city will be ours again
and we will remember the sweet kiss of concrete beneath our feet
we will dance the joyful bitter of pursuit in our hands
our hearts leaping in our throats
our lungs bursting for fear and wonder or just for laughter for laughter
in the brief flash of day above the grave we will run
Date no longer subject to change.
From The Bridge september 08 issue:
Mysterious street game to start in Marcy-Holmes
On Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m., Sixth Avenue Southeast and Southeast Main Street will serve as the starting point of a citywide street game known as Journey to the End of the Night. Essentially a combination of a race and tag, the event tests participants' stamina and wits for about seven miles as they pass a series of city checkpoints while evading capture from fellow participants.
(...)
"The goal of Journey to the End of the Night is ultimately about experiencing the city in a heightened state of awareness," he said. "To see the streets themselves as grounds for adventure and risk-taking, and to claim the public spaces for the sake of fun."

Tentative date is July 12.
Is that right, Lincoln?
July 12 indeed.
Big plans. We got big plans.
i am so tempted to try to make it to this since i could not participate in cg0's.
dax, do you know how you are getting to MN0?
Oh. Wow. I might be able to do this. CARAVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
doing this in a city that is not incredibly familiar to me sounds very difficult! maybe i will have to go to minneapolis in advance and get the lay of the land. and skate with the minnesota rollergirls. or whatever. i've never been there.
for the record, if they ever do a Journey to the End of the Night Boston, i am NOT going.
It would hardly be the first time someone played Journey in a city unfamiliar to them.
Plus large pieces of Minneapolis are a nice friendly grid! It's when the grid's edges are in unexpected places that you run into trouble.
I see that there is a Rollergirl bout on the 20th of September. This would not be a good date to hold the Journey MNØ, if you're still looking at that date, BU.
About getting to MNØ, I plan to use my new rocket pack.
For what it's worth, I'd never been to Chicago before... while there I not only completed a full manifest (along with my two fine compatriots-in-disguise) but also evaded arrest while dragging around a 1700-tonne tower...
If it is still missing by Journey: Minnesota and finds its way here, you can rest assured that we will not be so careless as our Chicag0 brethren - it shall not slip from our grasp.
CGØ careless? Please. It was clearly SLØ who fumbled the tower.
That might be a lucky thing... although Calyx was trying to save it in the name of all that is good and holy, I was after it myself to hold it for ransom... BLAST!
muffinbot, i am definitely planning to go. the megabus is our friend.
i have never been to to this city before either but i plan to do some serious map studying before heading out.
i was kind of planning on going. even if it was just me. but if there may be a whole FØEcakes contingent i am totally in.
and i've sort of always wanted to ride the Megabus, just to see what it's like.
i'm with you on the map studying. let's do it. and go to minnesota.
Here's a link to a general area of play. This zone subject to change, of course.
No further details will be published regarding checkpoint or finish line locations.
Ill be taking the Megabus from Chicago to Minneapolis. Megabus is your friend!
Ahem! Current MN Roller Girls champions The Rockits include SF0 player, very early MN0 doyenne, and ImpEx first pager Spacebug! (aka #808, KillaHertz!!) Maybe if all y'all give enough love to the Rollergirls, she'll be enticed to task more with everyone!
Hm.
September you say. Let's see if I can work any magic.
Dax? Minchy? FOEcakes?! it's all falling into place
Are we confirmed for the 13th of September?
September 13th? Poop, I was planning on coming up for this. But cannot on that weekend. Poop.
For everyone wondering, indeed: September 13. Date no longer subject to change.
See you then, everyone!
many regrets Lincoln. You are welcome in our fair twin towns any time, regardless.
That actually does make me feel better.
And I may take you up on that offer.
So that means you're coming?
I broke into an immediate and full on sprint. I was running with abandon, I had no idea where I was heading, and I didn't even care. After two full city blocks I looked over my shoulder and he was still behind me! I was quite amazed, I had expected him to give up by then, as he wasn't gaining any ground on me, and I was at a full sprint. I was figuring he would realize that he wasn't going to catch up and stop wasting the energy. Oh, was I wrong. The determination he possessed was amazing and appalling at the same time. I continued running, knowing I couldn't slow down.
Interestingly, it's like my birthday present too!
But in my case it's two days early.
If some kind MNØ type wants to put me up while I'm there, and I'm monetarily able to make the trip, I'll be there. I'm actually wanting to hit this, and from Minn, head to Chicago till the game on the 19th.
Oh, I'll be making both events, It's nice when things come together.
Finally, I have new shoes. They truly make me run faster and jump higher. No joke. I lept a mailbox, a dumpster, climbed the railing instead of the stairs to my front door, and ran across several lanes of traffic looking for the man who sells soccer balls on the corner (no luck).
But can I handle the technology that I have avoided for so long - or will the power consume me? This remains to be seen.
P.S. Chucks are still better for pushing pedals, no contest.
I think the technology I plan to be making use of is even more impressive, personally.
Concerning the rocket back, remember to light the gas first, then turn the oxygen knob. Gas first, then oxygen.
As always, chill your mixture.
I've actually managed to avoid these problems by having Levitating Potato instruct me in the use of monopropellants.
I've actually managed to avoid these problems by not using technology.
I wish I could make it and show you all how to really run a Journey.
Really? No technology in Journey: LA?
I've seen the pictures from checkpoint one.
Having MKII staff a checkpoint isn't using technology. It's asking technology nicely to assist you. The difference is respect.
Really, Lincøln, if you had the chance, you wouldn't use technology?
I would love to try those out. I saw a man do inhuman things with those at Burning Man one year. I'd either have the best time of my life or break my neck. Sounds like something I'd like to give a try.
We got some publicity in The Bridge newspaper. I'm putting some of their copy up above.
(this comment is to call attention in various friends' updates pages)
We really want more people to come! yay!
well done sir, well done.
[page 6, for those of you trying to find the article]
Godammit. This thing looks so gorgeous, and I've barely been able to get on the internet casually for weeks, let alone go on a trip. Work is crushing me - I'm sorry everyone, I gotta bail on this Journey. I've been fighting it for over a month, and I finally have to admit that I lost the battle. >=\
Super sorry to hear that. Hopefully I'll get to meet you some other time.
No one gives up. Not around here.
I'll see you in Minneapolis.
MNØ's trophies are finished.
The CGØ colorguard will accompany them safely to Minneapolis on the 12th. If all goes as planned, we will be returning with them on the 14th.
Ooh, I want one.
I want to go.
Any chance you can not do it on the 13th so I can come and take one of those trophies home?
Perhaps next time.
Because we have to have a next time, if only to lure you to our fair cities.
Party to follow. Some pleasures provided. BYO welcome
BEOYOTS* especially welcome.
*bring enough of your own to share
Oh that. Yeah. Logistics note: we will be happy to transport from the start anything that you want to ensure makes it to the finish line.
Except your body. We'll only do that in emergencies.
Dear Players,
I will be happy to transport your blue ribbons to the finish line.
Love,
Inky
You're so sweet! Oh here... here's mine, could you ta-- hey, wait a minute!
anyone coming from out of town in need of a place to stay, let me know and i'll see what i can do. I can for sure find more carpeted floor/sleeping bag type space.. maybe even a bed or air matress. even some pet-free space for you allergic peoples!
Recommendation: bring a swim suit.
Wait, for the after party?
Burn Unit, did we move the checkpoint out of lake Calhoun or something? You've got to keep me up to date on these things. We're still having Mothra, right? Tell me we're still having Mothra.
BU, do you mean that there will be a recreation of the 18-person hot-tub Insatiability party shenanigans? There were no swim suits in that tub.
Dax, you'll note it's only a recommendation, not a demand.
Can't Wait Can't Wait Can't Wait Can't
Oh my god!
Journey To The End of the Night is tommorow! Oh my god!
Also - Yay publicity!
Have fun tonight.
And have a nice cold glass of water waiting at the finish line for Tac.
(because he's going to win)
And tremendously sad.
You'll all just have to have extra fun for me. :)
Yeah. Though this just gives me more incentive to be back in town for Puzzle Quest 3 and blow the competition out of the water.
I'll be practicing my anagram skills.
Tac Haberdash got eaten by a bear.
He's ok though.
Dude, it wasn't a bear.
(It was a cougar.)
Fine. Don't tell us who won.
jerks.
I don't know the names of the team of two runners who were jointly awarded the runner trophy, but they were both local.
If I'm not misremembering the chaser trophy went to Dela Dejavoo, for captruing four yellow armbands (they count double!) and one blue one.
I WAS INDEED EATEN BY A BEAR. IT'S TRUE.
A bear with internet in it's tummy?
I will add that Dela won that chaser trophy with only *45 minutes* of chasing, having been turned near the very end. I'm sure she will be elaborating on this experience in the forthcoming Team CG0 & Friends praxis.
Did Dela Dejavoo have roller skates on? And horns?
Skates were prohibited, sadly.
Horns were not prohibited, but we were stripped down to only the bare essentials necessary and horns did not qualify.
(I totally want to be a chaser on skates if there is ever another Journey. if there can be a staff chaser on a bike, i think a staff chaser on skates would be pretty awesome too)
Skates give an edge to speed but are also much more maneuverable than bikes. I think that'd have to be tested out some.
Also, "if there is ever another Journey"? Are you kidding?
I'd let a skate chaser into LAØ's Journey next summer, because as fast and maneuverable as they are, they're also a big hinderance in that they can't take bad surfaces like grass or sand or cobblestone and it's hard to jump over walls. A bike chaser can always ditch or ghost ride the bike to add even more terror, a skate chaser has to keep the skates on.
Was there a chaser with those leaping bouncy stilts? I'd love to have one of those next year too. As it is I'll have the most terrifying chaser ever next year.
(and as a side note, I think any chaser, staff chaser or not, should qualify for the trophy)
Ooh! You should have a pogo-stick chaser!
Also, the trouble with giving trophies to staff is that they ought to be worrying about what is good for the game rather than letting their motivations be divided. I for one would have stayed at checkpoint two for a while if I were in it for the ribbons.
Whereas I think a staff chaser's job isn't to act like a threat to scare the runners, but to BE a threat to scare the runners. Also, I'll work on the pogo stick thing for next year.
I agree. But it's to be a threat in the places that don't have enough, and not in the places that are already sufficiently perilous. It's worth striving to distribute the threats properly, in my opinion.
I found making a sufficiently circuitous route negated such a problem, as there were many many routes to take to get to the next checkpoint and the next. Next year's LAØ route will be more straightforward and linear and we'll see what kind of problems the runners have with chasers.
Next year the chasers will again be advised to capture as many runners as possible, and the chaser with the most blue ribbons will win, no matter if they started the game as a chaser or not.
Crafty website, Unit.
LAØ, what be your Journey dates?
