Strange memories on this nervous night in Reno. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not in the long run . . . but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. . . .

In a first person narrative Gonzo Journalistic performance, this event calls upon up to 47 SFzero players to embody the subjective and radical experience that Hunter S. Thompson and Oscar Zeta Acosta undergo in early 1971. Gonzo Journalism is concerned with technique more than precision. It is the method actor's wet dream; an embodiment of the subject one is documenting. Slither into character and epitomize this emotional quest to find the American Dream; document thoroughly...

In an attempt at mimicking Thomspon's novel, we will do two things; metaphorically search for the American Dream by having our way with the loose nickel slots whilst cashing in on bottom barrel house cocktails, while simultaneously searching for the physical American Dream; an old burnt down psychiatrists office. 70scounter-culture garb required. This is a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream through a drug induced haze, A tribute to Hunter S. Thompson and Albert Hoffman that will fancifully recreate Thompson's account of riding out his final days in psychedelic counter-culture. Extra mega bonus points for those who complete the Find Mushrooms and Eat Themtask congruently

Logistics: There is a gamble bus called Lucky Tours that targets geriatric Filipino women. This bus charges 35 American dollars for 22 hours of dream crumbling, oh-so classy Reno. It leaves from 1028 Mission Street at 10AM on Saturdays and returns to San Francisco at 8AM the next day. If we reserve the entire bus; the price goes down around 10 dollars. I am scheduling the event for June7th to June 8th, however, if there are enough people that cannot do it then and would like to change the date, then the majority rules. If enough people show interest in this task/event, the money will need to be fronted to me no less than one week before May 31st. This is unless people feel more comfortable going down to the Lucky Tours office and purchasing it themselves. Do not worry, I am not a thief and I will not steal your money. If we decide to purchase tickets separately, please send me a message when you have bought yours.

Specifics:

-Contact Me About Purchasing Tickets For The Bus
-Dress As A 70s Countercultural Miscreant
-Play The Part Of A Drug Induced Journalist
-Don't Get Arrested
-Find the American Dream (Gamble nickel slots and indulge in libations)
-Find the Physical American Dream (Ask People If They Know Where It Is)
-Document Thoroughly
-Post Praxis to SFZero Road Trip

Wow. I would love to do this but that weekend is the final weekend of my zombie pin up shoot. Should you choose to do this the following weekend, you can most definitely count me in!!! I've only passed through Nevada and think that I am ready for an interesting Reno experience!

Both Eddy and Poncho have expressed interest in changing the date, so is there a possibility that gamble bus patrons would be able to attend more-so on the following weekend?? Which would be june 7th to june 8th.

If it is June 7th and 8th...you can count me in....I'm in need of some adventure!! I can also promise to bring one to 3 extra people who would love an occasion such as this.

Alas, I can't make that date. (I'm not even certain I could make the previous one, and besides, karmic justice demands that Eddy gets an event she can attend every once in a while, so don't go changing it back or anything.)

I'm afraid you'll be one day too late to cover the International Society of Weighing and Measuring conference, and one day too early to cover the SAVE International annual conference, which is a bummer, because this year's theme is "Discovering 'Value Added' Strategies," complete with the quote marks, which could be a good place to ask about the American Dream.

posted by Bjørn Teuleuse on May 6th, 2008 8:01 PM

Actually the SAVE Conference is that entire week...it ends on the 14th of June. Which means, of course, that while we visit the Silver Legacy Hotel, our very first stop will be the conference... splendid

I'm Sorry Minch,

This event relies on the Integrated Whole as Marx would say...and in light of two declinations I'm afraid i have to keep the date unchanged...

Might i suggest a remedy? Call in with cripplingly explosive diarrhea, there is no way anyone can get mad at you for that. On the contrary they feel embarrassed and ashamed that they even expected you to be there in the first place under such paralyzing conditions...

SO FAR WE HAVE 9 PLAYERS, 4 NON-PLAYERS, and 6 UNSUSPECTING RENO-GOERS. THAT MEANS THAT WE ONLY NEED 6 MORE PEOPLE TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN (PLAYERS OR NON-PLAYERS WILL DO). IN THE NEXT WEEK I WILL ARRANGE FOR TICKETING- SINCE YOU NEED TO PURCHASE TICKETS IN PERSON IN THE LUCKY TOURS OFFICE, I AM OFFERING TO GO TO THE OFFICE MYSELF AND PICK IT UP FOR YOU, THEN DELIVER IT TO YOU. THEY ONLY TAKE CASH, TRAVELERS CHECKS AND MONEY ORDERS SO YOU CAN GIVE ME CASH OR CHECK, CHECK IF YOU REALLY DONT TRUST ME. OR YOU CAN GO DOWN THERE AND BUY THE TICKET YOURSELF. IF THE BUS TRIP IS CANCELED DUE TO LACK OF PEOPLE THEY WILL REFUND YOUR MONEY. EITHER WAY, LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO DO SO THAT THE BALL GETS ROLLING. IF I AM RESERVING YOUR SEAT FOR YOU, I WILL NEED YOUR REAL FIRST AND LAST NAME SO SEND IT TO ME IN AN EMAIL.

TICKETS ARE 37 DOLLARS TOTAL (TAX IS INCLUDED IN THAT AMOUNT)

tho small saltshakers are a timetested device to fool the likes of pigs and parents alike, the experts recommend a film canister or other opaque container to protect your fleeting investment(s). that or a ziploc. crikey.

anybody besides scarlett find any ether yet?

Hey, many salt shakers are perfectly opaque. They just have the problem of the stuff shaking out of them.

I'm ok with that, i know Lank and Zemaluco might also be interested enough to just make it a smaller affair. Also, greyhound takes people up there and back round-trip for 40 bucks, we might not need a hotel if people agree to do that. and we can still take up more than just 3 or 4. Its only 3 more dollars than lucky tours

posted by Bjørn Teuleuse on June 4th, 2008 10:33 PM

I know this has been a pain in the ass for plenty of folks involved, but i'm going to make one last attempt at accommodating multiple people. There are a variety of folks that would make this trip beyond amazing, and most of them cannot come on this date. I would like to know if those people are even remotely interested in this idea, or if they don't even want to entertain the notion of going to reno. Upon recent conversations with other attendees and non-attendees alike, I am considering using a site called mypunchbowl.com that allows players to pick their preferred dates and it tells users which day works best for everyone. Again, if people are interested in this, we will push the date back, if not, then we are going this weekend. please send me message if you are interested in this, and with that message, send me your personal email so i can add you as an attendee on mypunchbowl.com

Best,
Bjorn
