Journey To The End Of The Night returns to the Bay Area.

The city spreads out before you. Rushing from point to point, lit by the slow strobe of fluorescent buses and dark streets. Stumbling into situations for a stranger's signature. Fleeing unknown pursuers, breathing hard, admiring the landscape and the multitude of worlds hidden in it.

For one night, drop your relations, your work and leisure activities, and all your usual motives for movement and action, and let yourself be drawn by the attractions of the chase and the encounters you find there.

Get your water and your comfortable shoes ready. Details to follow.

Journey to the End of the Night was born by the Bay in 2006, run again here in 2007, and now returns to the area with an epic pursuit through Oakland, finishing by the side of Lake Merritt. As always: no skates, no bikes, no cars, no segways, just your feet, AC Transit, and BART.

The game begins at the amphitheater in Mosswood Park, about a 5 minute walk from Macarthur BART. Here it is on Google Maps. Here's a nifty little map of the same place:

More information at http://totheendofthenight.com/oakland. Eventually, I'd like to get at least a basic account of every Journey up on that site, but I've got some more coding to do before that happens.

I shall have to see if I'm able to make it to this one. Probably not, but hopefully yes.

Unfortunately, I'm now recovering from surgery and am still supposed to avoid exerting myself by then.

One of our esteemed wrote this. I found it to be quite poignant.

You start at a place in a city, and are given a map indicating six places which you must visit, in order. As you proceed through the city to the checkpoints, you are pursued by chasers, whose only goal is to tag you and make you one of them. Survive to the final checkpoint without being tagged, and receive accolades. Fall along the way, and you can still be rewarded by fulfilling your new roll well and tagging more survivng runners than your chaser compatriots can manage to tag.

There are nearly limitless variations to this theme, some of which have been tried at previous iterations of the event, in other cities. You can do a search for "Journey to the End of the Night" to get some idea of the twists you may expect to see.

Room?
posted by Lincøln on June 14th, 2009 6:54 PM

So, I'll be coming up this Thursday. Is there a friendly couch or bed or nice little spot on the floor I can curl up on? Or a bed? Or a spare room? Or a boat? Please let me know if you're willing to put a wayward traveller up for a few days. I would also like to stay in the bay until the following Tuesday or Wednesday if my accommodations will allow it. If you have the open space and the open heart, please send me a message. Thank you for your attention.

The task for this one seems to be the Chicago version of the game. I don't quite feel right posting my Praxis there...
