Description:

Seeking your stories about how playing SFZero has changed your life.

I think that SFZero is an example of "transformative gaming"---a type of voluntary activity that is deliberately designed to change the way that participants view themselves, interact with others, and experience the world. But, I'm curious whether you agree, and what your experience has been. Comment here or send me a message.

I will use any collected anecdotes to (1) bolster my attempt to project an 8 ft radial field of positive neuro-waves that will affect the brains of those near me (2) secure government funding to relieve the Humanitarian Crisis (3) remember the future and plan history (4) decide whether I love you more than before. Thanks!

If you had to point to just one task
posted by rongo rongo on February 4th, 2010 12:12 PM

A task that took you somewhere unexpected...

For me, it was the task about giving small gifts to strangers. I was very surprised at how nervous it made me. Beyond nervous, it was downright alarming. And all the time, I knew that the worst that was likely to happen was that someone would say no thanks---so the alarm made no sense, but it was real. That made me aware of just how much effort and rationalization and procrastination I will use in my everyday life to avoid interactions with strangers, and how silly that is. I think it gave me a new expectation that often an interactions with a stranger can be positive.

Yay! Love-points!

I don't think I could pick a single task... +3

... but the game as a whole has been transformative in a manner I feel on a daily basis. Specifically, the game has shown me that what I create is worth creating. I have an over active self critic, who's rather a bitch a lot of the time, and said absolutely awful things to me. And then I started playing, and the accolades of the game began to drown out the insults of the self critic. I've met lovely people, made cherished friends, played games, dressed up, spilled my soul, and laughed - a lot, and all of that has been a joy; but the most powerful and unexpected was that the game offered me my own voice.

So thanks SSI.

thank you- Sean, Sam, Ian! +2

Practically on a daily basis, this game has and continues to restore my faith in humanity as both ingenious and magnanimous.

I cannot say I have met any any other collection of individuals whose average caliber of character matches those who I have had the privilege to meet through SFZero.

Not only has SFZero afforded me the opportunity to meet and interact with these people (all of you!!) but to live, learn, give and grow with them.

I do not pretend that this laconic commentary on my experience in the game is in any way comprehensive of all the benefits I have reaped; I can only hope my "real life" interactions with my fellow players are adequate to convey my continual gratitude to each and every one of you :)

Thank You!

much love,

Not wanting to detract from the stories above (nor to add my similar, if likely more awkwardly worded, version), I'd merely like to mention that it is extremely improbable that without this game I'd have kept my current facial furniture for more than a week or so, nevermind the 2 years and counting it's stared back from the mirror at me and weekly, or more, insisted with lip scratching and asymetry that I trim or otherwise tame it.

SFZero is an absolutely amazing concept. It's given me the chance to go to places and do things I'd never have done otherwise. I may not have made the greatest of contributions to the praxis collection, but it's not just about tasks. I think SFZero has changed the way I see and interact with my surroundings. I notice small things around me that I wouldn't have picked up on before. I like to go out and do things; try things out rather than believe them when I'm told.
What I like most of all is the people I've met through the game. As a normally solo player, it is always brilliant to have an opportunity to meet other like-minded people. The UKZero gatherings I've attended really have been among the most enjoyable events I've been to in my lifetime. I love the community spirit in the game, and the chances I've had to interact with people from all over the world.
And I hope the game hasn't finished affecting me yet. There are so many people I've yet to meet; journeys I've yet to make; experiences I've yet to enjoy.
Thankyou everyone, and especially the creators, for making SFZero the wonderful game that it is.
