Anybody feel like a game of Mao?

Yeah, I kinda do. (never played, but that's sorta the point, no?)

Of course you know what else we could do to get some people involved right here in these comments... a friendly game of Mornington Crescent. We'll be using the current rules for sanctioned tournaments, of course, complete with the ban on the Helsinki opening.

I'll start. Oxford Circus.

(no subject)
posted by adam. on December 19th, 2007 7:00 AM

haha excellent.

in that case, i'll play piccadilly circus.

(no subject)

Oh dear, paired circuses this early?

Well, when it gets to be my turn again I know what I'm going to do about that.

I'm not a complete newbie.

Devious move, chap. I'll jump in with the only obvious counter...

Cockfosters.

Don't neglect the fact that due to yesterday's rainstorm and the new year being less than 14 days away, we are forced to refrain from Chinese twister moves. That means you, Lincoln.

posted by Darkaardvark on December 20th, 2007 7:49 PM

Haha, excellent.

At this point I think I'll invoke the "Rainy Day" ruleset.

Your loss, Harmon.

And might I add: this is why we need a forum.

(no subject)
posted by teucer on December 20th, 2007 8:10 PM

Dammit, I was hoping you were going to try to get on the Northern line, and for that you'd need to keep it sunny.

Ah well. I don't think I'll be winning this one.

(no subject)
posted by Fonne Tayne on December 20th, 2007 8:56 PM

Damn right you won't win. Stop mangling the rules! Hm... Green Park does put a wrench in the works...

And anyone with a brain can see that Hyde Park Corner just puts a damper on the whole thing. That means I'll be forced to cut my losses and go to Wimbledon.

Paddington. Yeah, that's right: a quadruple junction, and every experienced player knows that my victory in a mere 26 turns is all but inevitable.

Forums are the tool of the devil.

Also, which is preferred:

Play something that requires rules with no knowledge of how to play. Other players who do know the rules may play alongside but may not help you to learn the rules in any way.

OR
Create a game whose rules may not be divulged (as with Mao, that initial rule should be shared). Teach this game to others by playing it with them.

Answer: Both. Simultaneously. Bien Sur. Isn't this the perfect example?

Paddington, eh? You're a wolf in sheep's clothing. It'll be less than 26 if you keep moving that fast.

I'll go.... Southwark... by the Tabard...

South Kensington."

Revisitation, Zone 1 bonus active.

How did you get to Kensington so fast?!?
posted by Fonne Tayne on December 21st, 2007 11:30 AM

No! ....FAIL! Revisitation before a complete circling of Zone 1 reneges the possibility of activating a zone-wide bonus. Furthermore, a southerly or westerly impetus (rather than northerly or easterly) doubles the loss of points.

Therefore, I'll take Blackfriars, for the Riverboat connection.

(no subject)
posted by teucer on December 21st, 2007 11:30 AM

Yep. I'm just banking on the fact that nobody's in a position to screw me over with it, and unless somebody's way better at this than me (likely) it won't be handing the game to one of my opponents.

EDIT: It's not a zone-wide bonus, of course; it only applies on the line I just got off of - which, of course, is Picadilly. This is explained in the errata about rule 41a.

(no subject)
posted by teucer on December 21st, 2007 11:35 AM

Heathrow Terminal 2. A dick move I know, but I couldn't resist.

On an unrelated note, if this task gets approved it's gonna be a pain to scroll all the way down to find the praxis.

(no subject)
posted by Adam on December 22nd, 2007 1:37 PM

On a related note, Im going to go wild and say West Croydon. It is the new end of the East London Line and its also on Tramlink and Im sure we are all aware of the Wimbledon Amendment.

So I pwn basically.

Well, is there anybody here who hasn't had the game explained to them and is thus learning it by doing?

On a note actually related to the game, I've been on Central for long enough to not only go to Monument but to switch to Bank for the Northern line. Things are not going as badly as I had feared.

posted by Burn Unit on December 27th, 2007 5:04 AM

Because with the zone bonus cleared, the block at Bank in place and the Hainault Loop operative, I can invoke a parallel arms and join at Edgware Road: free action modifiers to all non-circle routes!

I'd rather hemorrhage a quart of blood from my anus than have a forum.

Camden, hmm, this is tough, but I'm gonna invoke the Jubilee Bakerloo injunction and go with Maida Vale.

(no subject)
posted by teucer on December 27th, 2007 10:02 AM

I go to Moorgate, challenging Charlie Fish of course, and then claim the action modifier to get me north to Angel.

Dammit, if I'd been on the other side of the Northern Line I could've made it to Warren street, and from there with Frederick where he is it would've been a strait shot to Mornington.

(no subject)
posted by Adam on December 27th, 2007 12:58 PM

Angel is a trick move. Im going to continue the religious theme with St Paul's.

(no subject)
posted by Burn Unit on December 27th, 2007 2:25 PM

I believe a religion sequence bonus grants me one hop to St. John's Wood (praise Jesus) and a further crippling of JJason. This shuts down all you freebooters in the northwest for a round, doesn't it? Again I'm relatively new, so I'm sure I'm taking a risk: doesn't a lean harvest effect thereby shorten the number of turns for Lincoln's Jubilee Bakerloo injunction?
