Tasks / Luke Rhinehart At Heart

This task is retired.Humanitarian CrisisSociety For Nihilistic Intent And Disruptive Efforts

Make all of your decisions for a week based solely on the roll of a die.

Take it to the limit.

As a general guideline, it might be helpful to not determine yes or no questions with the die, but rather have it represent actual decisions. For example, instead of upon waking asking it "should I go to the bathroom? 1-3 is yes, 4-6 is no." Instead how about you make rules for the die, like: 1&2: Go to the bathroom in the toilet, 3&4: Go to the bathroom out the window, 5&6: Don't go to the bathroom for the next hour (or if that's too even for your tastes, you can make it 1-4: Go to the bathroom in the toilet, 5: Go to the bathroom out the window, 6: Don't go to the bathroom for the next hour). Personalize this task to fit your needs.

Also, a handy tip is to not fill the choices for the die all with enjoyable choices. Don't make 1: get ice cream, 2: play video games, 3: go to the beach, 4: masturbate, 5: get a massage, 6: watch a movie. Instead throw some detrimental choices in there. A better list might be: 1: Go to a Ben & Jerry's store and order three scoops of whatever flavor is in the far right bin, 2: play in traffic, 3: go swimming, 4: join an internet porn site, 5: get into a fight, 6: buy a new DVD. Or take it to the extreme and add some really bad things to the possible choices, like cuss out your boss, tell an annoying friend exactly what you think of them, or try to seduce your best friend's spouse.

You can also decide to roll the die every morning to establish general ruling principles for the day. For example a roll of a one would mean you skip all plans for the day and go to the zoo instead, a roll of two means you never walk that day, you run or crawl or skip or whatever, a roll of three means you speak only in questions, and so on. You can keep this same list for the whole week, or make a new one every day.

Whatever you do, document all of your choices and possible choices and the outcome of those choices (unless the die tells you not to).

What about 2d6?

Nah, too ordinary. Has to be 3d6.

Also, BU: Why no love for the d8?

Seriously!

Lovely and top-like,
tracing linking whirligigs,
to DM's chagrin.

I've always had a soft spot for the d8.

What happens when you arrive at a standard intersection? Can't the d4 be used in that specific instance?

Well, if there are buildings there are more choices than just the 4 directions...

And in places like Market Street in San Francisco, any given intersection could have 5 or more choices (3 or more streets intersecting at a given corner).

And what about the choice of stopping at the corner and waiting... for the bus, for a cab, or just for something to happen?

At a given corner, a 100 sided die might be insufficient with all the potential choices.

Every possible choice need not be represented. A four sided die could represent straight, left, wait for something to happen, and leave your car and walk.

I'll let you know, even if it means getting no votes from Senator Burn Unit, I will still only use six sided dice for this.

But I'll happily use 2d6 or 3d6 or even 10d6 if appropriate.
