I've always felt that the five groups as construed cover so much territory that any new group would have to find some radically different vector or dimension to express. So many nuanced things could fit under the existing groups' broad umbrella that players have to work hard to nail this task. Retiring one of the old groups seems like a mountain of madness to climb--creating a new group and retiring an old one would require some pretty damn good arguments, because you'd have to explain why the new one isn't just going to duplicate what the old one was already doing perfectly well.
Will SFZero players get to vote for or against a new group?
Or, at least get input before the final product is setup?
in the next era, whichever goup gets the least collective points will be retired...
Nooo! Save my precious Equivalenz!
Come on, guys! Get some points. FOR THE GOOD OF THE CITY.
Or, to keep things exciting, we could also go with, "in the next era, whichever group gets the most collective points will be retired" (or partitioned).
I wanna be University of BART Aesthemanetarian Psychobiogeographical Crisis Association...
I understand wanting to have no group, but I'm with Bex, I wanna be in every group and be able to do every task.
Allow me to reiterate:
I hate groups.
OK, this is getting a bit too tense. Sam, Ian and I are still working very hard on finalizing the details, so I'm going to be vague, but I hope this clears some things up:
First and foremost: the total number of groups is not fixed at five. This task - wisely - doesn't describe a group "trade", a vote-based competition for new groups, nor a total-point-value system for determining the relative value of groups.
Some of the most visible changes Insatiability will bring concern groups, because we want to make them a better part of SFZero.
We're still talking things through, but some of the scope for improvement should be fairly clear. Some players identify with their group, and others do not. The groups generally don't represent the bounds of their members interests or abilities. The grouping of tasks is often difficult, but has serious implications for who will actually be able to do them. While one purpose of the groups is to encourage collaboration with (new to you) players, their success in this is uncertain. Finally, there's a clear space for something that lets players describe affiliations which may have little to do with the ideological framing of Groups. Anyway, it's going to be fantastic, I promise!
Though the task is retired, there's another one of these in progress and we're just dying to know what it is. Come on dammit. Comeoncomeoncomeon! The most favorite thing about creating this task is seeing it done. At its advanced level, you know it's going to be completed by some of the best players of a given era. Which means quality is almost assured, and that's gold.
There's just not that many people who could have signed up for it before it was retired who haven't already done the task with one of the other groups. There's nine level 7 or above players who could have launched the group project before it was retired, and they'd have to recruit several lower level players since none of them are EQ, HC, or Biome (Eddy, Bex, Lincoln, Yellowbear, The Vixen, Rainbow Bright, Loki, iwsfutcmd, and Spar-- who, being groupless, couldn't have signed up for it without help anyway). That still leaves a large pool, but this mystery collaboration must include one of those players since they would have been the only people able to sign up. Manna, we cry for manna!
We get to that fourth group and we'll have nearly created an independent nation of groups, a parallel-parallax of the primary pentangle! It's all very unheimlich, baby.
I claim this task in the name of GAME!
Getting Absoutely Meta for Entertainment hereby announces our instantiation as a group for SFZero! We are the only group players can and do officially belong to simultaneously with their membership in another group. In fact, multiple affiliations are the number one requirement for GAME, and the only way to join is to also be part of another organizing body or adherent of some set of guiding principles. You cannot play GAME without playing the game!
Number two is the ability to hold two (preferably contradictory) mental states at the same time, one each from the following lists. It is not enough to have several traits from one list. We commit to holding two in our minds from different lists and strive to maintain them in balance. Failing balance, we strive to make them funny insofar as they are self-deprecating:
List A
a sense of humor
a belief it's just a game
fearlessness about trying new things
an ability to change your mind
thirst for unforeseen information in order to test boundaries
admiration for tricksters
List A Also
a powerful sense of the rightness of your cause
the willingness to defend the game to the bitter end
a cautious protective concern
fierce inflexibility on minute details
hunger for clearly defined structure without loose ends
disdain for deceitfulness
We expect All GAME tasks will be chosen from the list of retired or pretired tasks and completions submitted in comment forms, or to other players directly via private message, post, or trystero. GAME is committed to keeping its tasks alongside of, that is meta to the praxis.
We play for neither points nor votes. Who can beat that? We bring you a parallax utopian future of pointless tasking, a gray economy of collaboration, and a vigorous and unending debate about what play really means.
Look at the elephants in our living rooms: points, votes, score and quality, and groups. We confront these elephants time and time again from Lank to Lincoln, from haddock to blueberry, yea even bubblesort unto p00n! What is good enough? Who plays for the right reasons? When do we vote or flag and why?
What is more right? To play for votes or points?
mu
Indeed. This is just an example of two (dare I say) différances (I do dare!) which crop up again and again inside SFZero, not just between votes and points, but between isolation and collaboration, friend and foe, play and seriousness. Yes? The assertion of one over the other asserts by someone, somewhere, a center and a margin (hail, Daemon!) but in our social contract is precisely the shear point between center and margin, when the whole structure collapses on its supposedly strongest points.
What is more right? This is simply not the right question; the answer is mu, and exists Schrödinger's Cat-like in the social contract, the metagame. The answer is to keep playing, the gateless gate, the gameless game.
Combining the Zen mu with the greekletter mu for meta, and in nod to the blessed sacred chao, we offer the Sacred Mu
Because it exists in social space, our trajectory will never be complete, and will survive all eras, will outlive the players of the game, and cannot be obliterated by anyone, including the game's original creators. You have been playing it already, and you control it. This posting by one person, himself a creature of many dichotomies, simply materializes what you may have been thinking or doing all along. This assertion claims no primacy and cannot be ignored.
Thank you, god bless SFZero!
A cheer for SFZero, brought to you by GAME:
Glasnost, InsatiaBility, Rah Rah Rah!
Impossible EX-change, comme ci comme ca!
Saaamm, Iaaaan, Sean Sean Sean!!
(Additional appropriate titles: Goin' Absoutely Meta Everywhere; Getting Absoutely Meta for Evil; Getting Absoutely Meta for Evil Purposes, Lazy Ass Yobs [GAMEPLAY] anything involving fun and meta works just fine. Acronyms are fun, backronyms are funner, backronym portmanteaus [backronteau, if you will] best of all!)
(Additional sacred mu paraphernalia:
bigger version
Chinese character alone
Greek mu along
illustrator file for downloading and manipulations of your desire)
I want to term this comment "Everyone should see"
i would like to thank GYO Ben for giving out the test, and inspiring me with a new group, the likes of which have not been suggested yet. Now, if only this task was un-retired...
Any time, my man.
Any time.
SFZEROSAT II may come.

I'd be interested to hear arguments about retiring one of the other groups, as well.
