it has been taken seriously. There has been some extensive research into what it would take to accomplish it....turns out it is pretty hard...like a federal offense and mandatory jail time hard.
But looking at the logistically of it all 1000 points seams quite petty next to the satisfaction one would feel upon completing this successfully or the despair one would feel having failed

It's a level 8 task. I imagine once you hit level 8, points become quite the non-issue, and certainly not a motivator.
Not unless there's a secret level 9 in the game.
At least one player had a very good idea for this, but the plans fell through. In any case, I think it's not impossible. Do bear in mind that any attempt that'd get you arrested might well get you microwaved first.
One day I will do this. Points are of no regard.
I see someone wasted no time in signing up for this task…
The High Score Task (1 completed) (1 in progress)
But one completed? Is that a glytch?
Nope not a glitch, more like a test. If my history serves me correctly that was the second task ever completed.
To quote the http://help.sfzero.org/pmwiki.php/Main/AddingTasks-
Don't worry too much about being Location-specific. Brilliant SFZero players will find a way to do your London task in Chicago.
Anyone mind if we find a tower in GY to stick a flag on?
Suitably tall of course.
keep in mind, its 1000 points because its pretty much impossible.
many have had ideas for this task that they consider good, the truth is its not going to happen. its an unbelievably important asset to bay area TV and radio and they will not allow a flag on it. on top of that, it can't be climbed. the radiation would kill you. and they only shut it off for brief periods.
i think these tasks would be more appropriate:
up up and up
vertical jaunt
while not quite worth a thousand points, i'd think putting a flag up would give you a couple extra votes
even if you could get to the roof of a tower like this, the feet wouldn't be half as impressive (ie not worth 1000 points)
What if we bribed the security guards with an exorbitant amount of money?
Not that any of us have that much cash. Or maybe there is a dirty rich sf0'er out there.... SPEAK UP, YOU RICH MUTHA-TRUCKER!
Anyone know anything about remote control model planes?
the radio waves coming off the tower that close would interfere with the remote control system
The plane idea could work, if you made a point of figuring out what distance it could still operate from, make sure it hase a range-finder and other telemetry systems, then set it in a perfectly calculated crash course, and have the CPU hold it once it looses radio contact.
How about a hang glider? hmm.. crashing and getting electrocuted doesn't sound like much of a payoff though.
he's not the first to have the remote control idea.
the problem is attaching a payload that would consist of a flag and whatever would be needed to attach it to the tower. you might need a big plane. there were also many unanswered question about interference. would an RC plane even work at the top of such a tower?
and there's need for a good deal of control, which is difficult at such a distance
The "attatchment" is easy enough. The task says "plant", and doesn't specify flag size. A smallish flag attatched to a bottom heavy sand filled platform should do the job... All you need to do is get whatever it is above the surface and bombs away...
Flag attached to a decent-sized Neodynium magnet. It won't come off.
super strong magnets could attach it. But i don't know anything about the iterference or control. We need an engineer. I'll work on that...
hmmmm I think that there will be a way to do this. what about.... what we need is someone on the inside.... there is a platform at about 700 feet, for maitnence. We need someone on the inside, to get us in, and up there, and then from there, we can manage. Or maybe someone who is going up to put up new sender out things.... We need to get someone on the inside, and someone who can lobby for some sort of pointless new addition, like the sutro cam, which needs someone to go up to put it up, then access to the person who is supposed to put it up.
I think.... hmmmm... I think I should have payed more attention in the wavelengths portion of chemistry class last year. Well, thats ok, I'll just study it myself. We need to know what would be good for getting it up those last 200 feet. Of course they wouldn't let a flag stay there, but the point is to get it there, not to keep it there.
simply kill the power, walk up the stairs, get a lead suit, and then you free hand it the rest of the way. Simple
Since all my solutions usually hae to do with marrying someone, I won't say anything.
Sniper rifle, sticky flag bullets.
Okay, so everyone should know that all television will go digital I think by 2009. Which means that all signals will stop being broadcast, because antennae on a tv or 'bunny ears' cant be used. So if the antennae wont be illegal, then that means that the gov't is shutting down the signals being broadcast i.e. Sutro Tower. Right? So that would mean that the radio waves wont be broadcast and therefore no nukeage. So, at that point, what can the tower be used for? At least my impression was that it is used for tv signal mostly. So, if the tower is rendered mostly useless, will it become an abandoned structure? If so, is it possible that if this task is completed, it can also be used for the 'climb a structure at least 30 feet high' and the 'enter into an abandoned building.' or something like that?
cause if this theory is correct, I will ahve a plane ticket to SF from Orlando on the day that the TV broadcast signal ends...
Unfortunately for us taskers, it doesn't work that way; signals will continue to be broadcast after the analog sunset hits in 2009. It's just that instead of an analog signal or an analog/digital mix, the broadcast will be digital only.
Not to say I don't have my own ideas about how to accomplish this... *grin*
I will definitely "flag" the "first completion" of "this task."
Man on Wire:
From : http://www.fandango.com/manonwire_v426698/summary
On August 7, 1974, a 24-year-old French high-wire artist named Philippe Petit committed one of the most astonishing performance stunts of the late 20th century: he strung a thin cable in between the two towers of the World Trade Center and not only walked across, from one building to another, but did a nerve-wracking series of knee-bends and acrobatic movements on the cable, some 1,350 feet above the ground, before turning himself in. This occurred to the consternation and chagrin of Port Authority policemen, who immediately arrested Petit for the act -- prompting many to dub Petit's stunt "the artistic crime of the century." James Marsh's documentary Man on Wire revisits and recounts this chain of events some 34 years after they occurred. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide
The amount of work put into this heist-like crime is incredible. Someday a tasker will do it.
Inspiration comes from everywhere and everywhen.
completing this task could be done easy with a bit of an investment...just toss tons of flags off a helicopter and that would cost like $200 or something ....but ofcourse...if you were to complete something this big...youd want a full on WIN tatood across your forehead for the rest of sf0s days. id like to see someone pull this off full on james bond status...with shooting darts at employees racing to the top to put the flag down.
woah woah woah we missed something BIG!!!...it was named after ADOLPH sutro...meaning...if you plant a jewish flag up there..thats a double win.
The problem here is that we're looking at this from the wrong angle. This is my best guess, but if someone could obtain or make a volumetric display that could project a flag at a distance, we could easily accomplish this. That's my two cents!
Is this Erich Spurgin fellow related to one miss Emily Spurgeon?
We needn't use the equipment as is out of the box. Engines can be modified.
The parachute could serve as a flag, que no?
If the flag is small, won't it be difficult to document?
I was thinking, perhaps creating some sort of remote control device, and use as a flag, ripstop cloth with al small neodymium magnet sewn into it. Fly it high over Sutro Tower, and drop several. I'm assuming Sutro Tower is made out of ferromagnetic metal here, and given the incredible strength of neodymium magnets at least one will stick to the top, and the flag will fly.
However, I have no idea what effect incredibly strong magnets will have on the signaling on the tower. And neodymium magnets are dangerous. They can crush fingers, and handling them you, or the poor workers who will have to remove them may be injured. Maybe attach a warning label to the flag?
Unless you can somehow remain anonymous for this, I can see the sublime joy of accomplishment, followed by prison. Yeah...so...
Prank caller! Prank caller!
So I stopped by the tower today for the first time, and I think this wouldn't be so hard with a high flying kite and a flag for a tail.
It might even seem somewhat innocent when the department of homeland security showed up to cart you off and inspect your shoes. "But mr. sir, I was just flying my pink barbie kite!"
A perpetrator under the age of 18 would be desirable.
There are a few issues to contend with when it comes to high-flying kites. These include legal issues.
I wouldn't want to do anything remotely suspicious in person near any major communications towers, military facilities, major landmarks or government buildings. Bullets hurt. :(

Apparently, his ascent was "authorized", and the pics are dated January 15, 2006. Some nice photos, but really: no flag? Not a word about what constitutes "proper RF protection"?
if this is actually feasible...and someone really does it...
we're going to need a new iconic and nearly impossible goal.
I've been drawn back to this site, and signed up, only because of this task. Tonight, I realized how to get it up the tower, but not to the top. Is this still acceptable?
Oh, and Austria's flag has been up there for ages : P
You could always pull an Oceans 11 or a Thomas Crowne affair and use a Trojan horse method to get access to the tower. Have a "friend" make a purposefully unusccessful attempt at planting a flag, and then when they turn off the tower to get it down, climb up and put a real one there. :)
No one has completed this yet? No wonder people tell me the game is slow and uninteresting.
It's as if someone removed all the interesting and intense and refilled the game back up with hot air. Shame.
I have an idea for how to do this, the problem lies in the logistics of getting credit and points without getting popped by the FBI. Thoughts?
You know i'm on board, but the funding will be a problem
You think I couldn't build it all out of garbage and household chemicals?
Read the disclaimer. What, you think I actually did everything my praxes have ever claimed?
Having dealt with those nice folks in shiny black sunglasses and darker than black suits before, I can tell you that the first thing that the nice folks in Room 614 are going to do is pinpoint SF0 as something that bears looking into once someone "attacks" the Tower, and despite what any disclaimer you could possibly put up, they will use what they find as cause for a deeper investigation, even if it's not admissible as evidence.
So the question stands: I have the perfect, and I mean perfect, way of completing this (ask Pix), but prison and I won't do well together, so how does one get away with it?
I have no problem with prison as a consequence of doing a really great task.
Yeah? If you'll be the fall guy, I'll be the engineer. Lol.
I'm sure some of you must know about Minecraft...
I want there to be an equivalent to this for Minneapolis. Perhaps the Foshay.
Aw, I had an idea to do the exact same thing at some point and submit it as a proof for the Low Score Task. Now it wouldn't be original.
